Palestinian Foreign Minister Applauds UN Resolution as Initial Step Towards Peace in Gaza

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The United Nations Security Council has officially ratified a resolution endorsing the proposed plan by U.S. President Donald Trump to address the long-standing conflict in Gaza. Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin has described this action as a "vital starting point" for achieving enduring peace.

Passed on Monday, the resolution calls for the establishment of a multinational security force in Gaza to maintain order and avert renewed conflicts. It also encourages member nations to engage with the newly formed Board of Peace, which will oversee Gaza's reconstruction and economic revival after extensive devastation caused by years of conflict.

In remarks from Ramallah, Shahin highlighted that this resolution is just a preliminary step in a lengthy journey to achieve peace. He stated, "The acceptance of this resolution is essential for the people of Gaza. It sets up a blueprint for security, governance, and rebuilding efforts, but its success hinges on commitment from the international community and all stakeholders involved," he mentioned.

The foundational U.S. plan integrated into the resolution lays out a strategy for demilitarizing conflict areas, distributing humanitarian aid, and implementing gradual reconstruction projects. It also proposes a governance model to oversee reconstruction activities, focusing on restoring critical infrastructure, healthcare, and educational services in Gaza.

Diplomatic sources point out that, while the resolution enjoys widespread international backing, substantial challenges in ensuring ground-level compliance still exist. The plan does not directly resolve deeper political rifts between Israeli and Palestinian authorities, which may pose impediments to its execution. Nonetheless, advocates contend that the deployment of a multinational security force and the establishment of the Board of Peace provides a systematic approach to oversee and enforce compliance with the resolution.

Shahin underscored the necessity of international collaboration. "The Security Council's endorsement is a stride in the right direction; however, genuine peace is reliant on active participation from all member states to guarantee safety, rebuilding, and economic revival. This is an opportunity for the global community to assist Gaza in emerging from devastation and laying groundwork for a sustainable future," he expressed.

The resolution has also spurred cautious optimism among humanitarian organizations, which caution about the dire toll the conflict has taken on Gaza's civilian population. Years of sporadic warfare have left its infrastructure in tatters, resulting in high unemployment and widespread displacement. Experts argue that the coordinated international aid envisioned by the plan is vital to prevent further humanitarian emergencies and stabilize the region.

With the Security Council's endorsement, the Trump-backed peace initiative now transitions to the implementation stage, necessitating international actors to work closely with local authorities in Gaza, Israel, and neighboring nations to ensure practical benefits for civilians and long-lasting stability in the region.

The resolution's passage signifies a diplomatic achievement in a conflict that has led to countless deaths, the displacement of millions, and instability throughout the greater Middle East. While significant challenges persist, the action by the Security Council brings a glimmer of hope that organized international engagement could pave the way for peace, security, and recovery in Gaza.
