A rare Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 1518, crafted in 1943, has sold for an extraordinary 14.19 million Swiss francs ($17.6 million) at an auction in Geneva — reaffirming its position as one of the world’s most coveted and valuable watches.
The auction, conducted by Phillips Auction House, concluded in under ten minutes, attracting five bidders to compete for the treasured timepiece. The iconic wristwatch was ultimately acquired by a telephone bidder as top collectors, watchmakers, and enthusiasts congregated at the Hotel President in Geneva to witness this record-setting event.
This specific stainless-steel Patek Philippe had previously made headlines in 2016 when it sold for 11 million Swiss francs ($11 million) — at that time, the highest bid ever for a wristwatch. Its recent sale marks a significant 29% increase in value over nine years, further enhancing its allure among watch collectors and aficionados.
The Patek Philippe Reference 1518 is celebrated for both its technical excellence and rarity. Launched in 1941, it was the first perpetual calendar chronograph produced in mass, setting a milestone in the realm of watchmaking. Of the roughly 280 models produced, most were encased in yellow gold, with only a few in pink gold, and an exceptional four in stainless steel.
This model is believed to be the first ever created in stainless steel, further elevating its legendary status. Its elegant design coupled with outstanding mechanical precision makes it one of the critical achievements in the luxury watch industry.
“The Patek Philippe 1518 embodies the pinnacle of design excellence, mechanical ingenuity, and rarity,” stated Phillips representatives post-auction. “It truly epitomizes the crowning achievement in watch collecting.”
Though this 1943 model was surpassed in 2019 by the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, which achieved $31 million, its recent auction sale underscores its enduring prestige in the luxury watch market.
The two-day Phillips auction boasted 207 lots, achieving total sales of 66.8 million Swiss francs, setting a record for the highest revenue ever garnered in a watch auction. With 1,886 registered bidders from 72 nations, the event highlighted the increasing global interest in rare vintage watches.
With its unmatched craftsmanship, limited availability, and enigmatic creation story, the Patek Philippe Reference 1518 indeed exemplifies the gold standard for luxury watch collectors across the globe.
