Peru Enforces State of Emergency as Protests Escalate Over Crime

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Interim President Jose Jeri has announced a state of emergency in Peru in response to weeks of escalating protests throughout the nation. The declaration was made on Tuesday after significant unrest in Lima and the neighboring port city of Callao, where large crowds have taken to the streets demanding accountability and action against corruption and organized crime.

The state of emergency is set to commence at midnight on Wednesday and will last for a duration of 30 days. This emergency provision empowers the government to deploy military forces for street patrols and impose restrictions on the freedom of assembly and other civil liberties. This announcement marks a critical first step by President Jeri, who has been in office for nearly two weeks.

Public outrage over rising crime rates and extensive corruption scandals has contributed to the unrest, leaving many communities feeling insecure. In a televised address, President Jeri stated, “Crime has surged alarmingly in recent years, inflicting severe suffering on numerous families and impeding our nation’s development. That changes today. We are starting to reshape the narrative of insecurity in Peru.”

The President asserted that this state of emergency would empower his government to take decisive actions against organized crime, restore public confidence, and bring stability back to the streets of Peru. “We are shifting from a defensive strategy to an offensive one in our battle against crime,” he affirmed, pledging to “reestablish peace, serenity, and the trust of millions of Peruvians.”

Peru's political climate has been tumultuous for years, with frequent leadership changes contributing to ongoing instability. This declaration follows the impeachment of former President Dina Boluarte earlier this month, who was ousted amid serious corruption allegations and her failure to address the rising crime rates.

Recently, over 200 individuals, including protesters, journalists, and police officers, have sustained injuries in violent confrontations. Tragically, one protester was reported to have been shot by police during a demonstration in Lima. Many of the demonstrators are young people increasingly frustrated by government corruption and a deteriorating security climate.

Officials have emphasized that the state of emergency will also safeguard vital sectors, such as transportation, which has been severely affected by organized crime. This year alone, 47 bus drivers have lost their lives in incidents believed to be linked to extortion. The earlier murder of a well-known musician, correlated with gang activity, had previously led to a partial state of emergency in parts of Lima from March to July.

Interim President Jeri, who concurrently serves as Speaker of Parliament, will remain in power until July 2026. His administration faces significant challenges, as this state of emergency underscores not only the deeply entrenched political crisis in the nation but also the pressing need for reforms in governance and law enforcement.

With seven different governments over the past decade, Peru now finds itself at a pivotal juncture—battling to restore order, rebuild trust, and shield its population from the escalating cycles of violence and corruption that threaten its democratic fabric.
