Political Unrest in Bangladesh Following Sheikh Hasina's Death Sentence

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Dhaka, Bangladesh – November 19, 2025: The death sentence imposed on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged crimes against humanity has plunged Bangladesh into a political crisis. Currently in exile in India since August 5, 2024, her party, the Awami League, is facing restrictions that prevent it from participating in the crucial elections scheduled for February.

Hasina’s son has indicated that the Awami League may hinder the electoral process if the restrictions are not revoked, demanding an inclusive approach to stabilize the nation. Political analysts warn that this situation, along with the historical tendency for violent responses to protests, might render the election period increasingly perilous.

“The interim government has completely silenced the Awami League… the level of division is reaching alarming heights,” stated Michael Kugelman, a senior fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He highlighted that the main concern revolves around potential electoral violence, particularly in light of the challenges faced by Bangladesh’s police, who endured the brunt of civil unrest in 2024.

Since Hasina’s exile, Bangladesh’s interim administration, spearheaded by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus, has encountered pressure to conduct a credible electoral process. This administration must navigate a politically complex landscape where decades of leadership by either Hasina or her enduring rival have left citizens deeply divided. Observers assert that Yunus needs to facilitate free and fair elections without favoring the Bangladesh Nationalist Party or the Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s major Islamist party.

Although Bangladesh has formally requested her extradition, India is not expected to comply, enabling Hasina to steer the Awami League from a distance. Analysts predict that Hasina will patiently manage her party's activities from India while strategizing for a potential political return when conditions allow.

Former head of the BBC Bengali Service, Sabir Mustafa, remarked that the Awami League faces daunting hurdles in Hasina’s absence. “The party requires significant reform to progress. Without Hasina motivating these changes, regaining a solid foothold in future elections will prove challenging,” Mustafa stated.

The ruling has prompted varying responses from the international community. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International expressed concerns regarding fairness and due process, whereas the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights acknowledged the significance of this moment for victims of last year's violence, though opposing the death penalty.

Kugelman reiterated that the foremost priority for Yunus is to uphold a peaceful atmosphere leading into February elections. “These elections hold substantial stakes—being the first in nearly two decades with high expectations for fairness,” he declared. Analysts emphasize that effectively managing security, voter trust, and equitable participation will be crucial in restoring political stability and enhancing Bangladesh's international standing.

With intense political divisions, an electoral ban on the Awami League, and Hasina’s sustained influence from abroad, Bangladesh confronts a challenging road towards a credible electoral process. The strategy employed by the interim government in response to these factors will significantly influence the country's political landscape in the coming years.
