Toy maker Pop Mart has officially announced a major collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment to develop a feature film based on its popular character Labubu, the “ugly-cute” monster loved by fans worldwide.
The upcoming film is still in early development and will be a mix of live-action and CGI, aiming to bring Labubu to life on the big screen. This project marks a significant step for Pop Mart as it expands its popular toy characters into the global entertainment industry.
The movie will be directed and produced by Paul King, known for successful films like Paddington, Paddington 2, and Wonka. He will co-write the screenplay with Steven Levenson, best known for Dear Evan Hansen.
Labubu was originally created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung in 2015 as part of “The Monsters Trilogy.” Lung will also serve as an executive producer for the film.
This collaboration reflects Pop Mart’s long-term goal of turning Labubu into a global entertainment franchise, similar to how The Walt Disney Company built its iconic characters into films, merchandise, and theme parks.
The company has already seen strong growth, with its global popularity helping boost its market value significantly over the past year. The Labubu film is expected to further increase Pop Mart’s international reach and open new revenue streams through licensing and entertainment content.
Pop Mart is also celebrating the 10th anniversary of “The Monsters” with a global tour, with its latest event taking place in Paris.
