In a significant ruling, a US court has sentenced Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, a notable member of the iconic hip-hop group the Fugees, to a 14-year prison term. This sentencing occurred on Thursday in Washington, DC, following Michel's conviction for illegally channeling millions in foreign donations into Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election bid.
Michel, who opted not to address the court, faced guilty verdicts on 10 charges, which included conspiracy and serving as an unregistered agent for a foreign entity. Key witnesses in the trial included former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Court records indicate that Michel received upwards of $120 million from Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, also recognized as Jho Low, who is a fugitive linked to the 1MDB corruption scandal. Michel purportedly utilized straw donors to funnel these funds into Obama’s campaign. The 1MDB scandal saw billions misappropriated from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, with many high-profile Malaysian officials, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak, already facing convictions.
Prosecutors characterized Michel’s actions as deceitful and detrimental, asserting that he manipulated the US electoral process for foreign advantages. It's prohibited for foreign entities to contribute to US election campaigns or to pay others to donate.
Additionally, prosecutors accused Michel of attempting to obstruct a Justice Department inquiry into Low and the 1MDB scandal, tampering with witnesses, and committing perjury throughout his case. Due to the severity and scale of his offenses, federal guidelines recommended a life sentence.
Michel’s defense argued that the foreign donations were not meant to sway policy decisions and labeled the sentence as “absurdly high,” typically reserved for extreme offenders like terrorists or drug lords. They have indicated plans to appeal the ruling.
Hailing from Brooklyn, Michel was a key figure in the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, a group that earned two Grammy Awards and sold millions of records in the 1990s.
This case starkly illustrates the grave repercussions of illicit foreign financial involvement in US elections and underscores the government's commitment to maintaining election financing integrity.
