Authorities have confirmed that a private jet, carrying eight individuals, crashed during takeoff on Sunday evening at Bangor International Airport. The incident involved a Bombardier Challenger 600, a well-known business aircraft, and occurred at around 7:45 p.m. local time. Currently, there are no updates on the status of those onboard. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting a joint investigation into the cause of this crash.
The crash took place amid a severe winter storm that has impacted New England and large parts of the eastern United States. Bangor and nearby areas experienced heavy snowfall throughout Sunday, resulting in hazardous conditions for both air and ground travel. Emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the scene, and the airport was temporarily shut down following the accident involving the single aircraft attempting takeoff.
Bangor International Airport is a significant regional hub, offering direct flights to destinations such as Orlando, Florida; Washington, D.C.; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Located roughly 200 miles north of Boston, it is an essential transportation hub for Maine and its neighboring regions.
The ongoing winter storm has led to extensive travel disruptions nationwide, with thousands of flights experiencing cancellations or delays. On that Sunday alone, nearly 12,000 flights were canceled across the United States, with approximately 20,000 facing delays, as reported by flight tracking sources. Major cities including Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, New York, and parts of North Carolina and New Jersey were notably affected by the inclement weather.
The Bombardier Challenger 600, launched in 1980, is a prominent business jet recognized for its spacious “walk-about cabin” and capacity to host between nine and eleven passengers. It remains a popular choice for private charters and corporate travel due to its comfort and range.
Currently, authorities continue to investigate the crash, with emergency teams on site providing assistance and assessing the overall situation. Officials have advised the public to avoid the area to support ongoing rescue and investigative efforts.
This incident underscores the inherent risks of air travel during severe weather conditions, with more details anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
