Qatar Sounds Alarm on Strait of Hormuz Disruption

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Qatar has raised concerns that the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz could lead to a significant global crisis impacting the economy and security.

During a recent United Nations briefing, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative, emphasized that disturbances in this critical maritime route have presented major economic hurdles for Gulf nations and the broader international community since March.

This media briefing also addressed a draft UN Security Council resolution regarding the strategic waterway, alongside representatives from the United States and Gulf Cooperation Council member states like Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.

Sheikha Alya noted that the disruption has impacted nearly 20% of global trade in oil and liquefied natural gas, disrupting international supply chains and leaving over 20,000 seafarers stranded.

Qatar articulated that the continuing crisis poses risks to global energy security, economic stability, and humanitarian conditions, potentially escalating regional tensions. The nation underscored that this situation threatens international peace and safety.

Sheikha Alya reiterated that safeguarding navigation freedoms in the Strait of Hormuz is an international duty and mandated under maritime law and pertinent UN Security Council resolutions.

Qatar hopes that UN member nations will endorse the proposed resolution to protect maritime pathways and ensure secure navigation through this vital waterway.
