The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting international initiatives aimed at promoting global peace and stability. Speaking at the 222nd Executive Board meeting of UNESCO in Paris, HE Dr. Nasser bin Hamad Al Hanzab, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation in achieving these goals.
Condemnation of Attacks on Qatar
Dr. Al Hanzab highlighted that Qatar was subjected to an attack by Israel on September 9, targeting residential areas that housed schools, kindergartens, and diplomatic missions. He described the assault as a violation of international law and Qatar’s sovereignty, urging the international community to take a strong stand against attacks on education and cultural institutions.
Protecting Education in Conflict Zones
Qatar stressed the need to safeguard schools, universities, and places of worship in conflict zones, including occupied Palestine. Dr. Al Hanzab called on UNESCO member states to uphold their shared responsibility in protecting education and cultural heritage, emphasizing that attacks on educational institutions are crimes against humanity that threaten regional stability and human development.
Investment in Education and Culture
Qatar reiterated its belief that investing in education and culture is key to building resilient societies. The country has focused on developing modern educational systems based on innovation, scientific research, and youth skill-building. This aligns with UNESCO’s goals of ensuring inclusive and quality education for all.
Advancing Women’s Empowerment
Dr. Al Hanzab highlighted Qatar’s ongoing initiatives to empower women through collaborations with intergovernmental organizations and civil society partners. He emphasized that women’s empowerment is a collective responsibility and a vital part of achieving sustainable development globally.
National Strategy for Sustainable Development
Qatar places education at the heart of its national strategy. The country has invested in educational infrastructure, workforce development, scientific research, institutional capacity, youth empowerment, and innovative projects. These efforts aim to promote peace, human development, and societal resilience.
Multilateral Cooperation and Global Challenges
The representative stressed that today’s global challenges, including humanitarian crises, economic difficulties, and rapid technological changes, require stronger multilateral cooperation. He urged countries to work together to ensure effective and inclusive responses to global problems.
Dr. Al Hanzab reaffirmed Qatar’s ongoing support for UNESCO’s work in advancing education, science, and culture. He emphasized that protecting education from attacks and promoting peace and development remain top priorities for Qatar, as the country continues to collaborate with the international community to build a safer, more educated, and sustainable world.
