Qatar Gene Bank Preserves 11.37 Million Seeds to Protect Biodiversity

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Qatar's Ministry of Municipality has highlighted the major achievements of the Qatar Gene Bank in conserving genetic resources and protecting biodiversity during the celebrations of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026.

The event was held under the theme, "Acting Locally for Global Impact," emphasizing the importance of biodiversity conservation, genetic resource protection, ecosystem sustainability, food security, and sustainable development.

The ministry stated that since its establishment in 2012, the Qatar Gene Bank has successfully preserved 11.37 million seeds, representing nearly 75 percent of the country's wild plant species. This achievement marks a significant step in safeguarding Qatar's natural heritage and ensuring the long-term conservation of valuable plant genetic resources.

According to the ministry, the Gene Bank has documented 1,404 genetic accessions and carried out more than 1,200 field missions across Qatar and its nature reserves to collect, monitor, and preserve plant diversity.

The Gene Bank has also registered 894 Qatari genetic resource accessions in internationally recognized databases, helping to strengthen global scientific knowledge and cooperation in biodiversity conservation. In addition, it has preserved 3,500 standard herbarium specimens, creating an important reference collection for research and environmental studies.

As part of its efforts to build local expertise, the Gene Bank has trained 100 participants through 20 regional and international training courses, providing a total of 600 training hours in biodiversity conservation and genetic resource management.

The ministry further noted that Qatar's genetic resources have been officially registered in the global system of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This registration enhances Qatar's contribution to international efforts aimed at protecting biodiversity, preserving genetic resources, and supporting sustainable agricultural development.

The achievements of the Qatar Gene Bank reflect the country's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and food security for future generations.
