Qatar Showcases Key Wildlife Projects at CITES Conference 2025

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Qatar has highlighted its major environmental protection and wildlife conservation efforts at the 20th CITES Conference of the Parties, which is currently being held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This international gathering brings together countries from around the world to discuss the protection of endangered species and the strengthening of global conservation policies. Qatar’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to safeguarding nature and preserving wildlife for future generations.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change sent a high-level delegation led by Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Muslimani, Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves. During the conference, Dr. Al Muslimani met with Mohammed bin Hamad Al Zaheri, Director General of the UAE’s International Fund for Houbara Conservation. Their meeting focused on enhancing cooperation on houbara conservation programs, including breeding initiatives, release operations, and overall project management to support the survival of this important bird species.

Both sides discussed how joint programs can expand scientific research, improve breeding methods, and strengthen long-term conservation strategies. They also reviewed the progress of existing projects and explored new opportunities for collaboration between Qatar and the UAE to protect this species both locally and regionally.

The Qatari delegation also held talks with Andrei Kim, Vice-Chair of South Korea’s forests and wildlife committee. This discussion aimed at exploring areas of wildlife protection and shared environmental challenges. The two parties expressed interest in expanding cooperation through technical partnerships, training programs, and knowledge exchange. They also explored plans for developing new wildlife conservation projects that could benefit both countries.

Qatar’s participation in the CITES Conference demonstrates its active role in global environmental discussions. The meetings held during the event underline Qatar’s desire to work closely with international partners to protect endangered species and promote sustainable environmental practices. By strengthening cooperation with countries like the UAE and South Korea, Qatar continues to support global efforts toward a healthier and more balanced natural ecosystem.
