Doha has opened a remarkable new cultural landmark with the launch of the Lawh Wa Qalam: M.F. Husain Museum. The museum is dedicated to the life, art, and worldwide influence of Maqbool Fida Husain, one of the most famous modern artists of the 20th century. Often described as the “Picasso of India,” Husain’s legacy spans continents, cultures, and creative disciplines. This new space, located in Qatar Foundation’s Education City, covers more than 3,000 square metres and offers visitors an immersive artistic experience that reflects Husain’s own free and dynamic vision.
The architecture of the museum is rooted in a simple sketch created by Husain himself. From this sketch, four unique structures were designed: a bright blue block, a tall white cylindrical tower, a bold yellow pathway, and a tent-like feature. These shapes represent the movement, curiosity, and emotional energy that defined Husain’s vast body of work. Throughout his career, Husain explored many art forms—painting, cinema, photography, calligraphy, and design. The museum captures this range, helping visitors understand the depth and passion behind his creativity.
The museum not only celebrates Husain’s artistic talent but also highlights his strong cultural ties with the Middle East. His relationship with Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, played a significant role in the final phase of his career. She admired his unique way of portraying Arab civilisation, which led to several commissioned projects. This connection eventually encouraged Husain to accept Qatari citizenship in 2010. Born in 1915 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, Husain spent much of his later life in Dubai, London, and Doha—cities that greatly influenced his global identity.
The museum’s inauguration was a star-studded event attended by influential cultural and creative figures from around the world. Among the guests were Bollywood filmmaker and designer Gauri Khan, celebrated fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and the Maharaja and Maharani of Baroda, Samarjitsinh and Radhikaraje Gaekwad. Their presence highlighted Husain’s lasting impact across countries and generations. Family members of the artist, including Mustafa Husain, also attended, making the event both emotional and historic.
Visitors to the museum can explore various stages of Husain’s career and get a close look at his artistic evolution. The galleries are designed to allow people to move freely, symbolizing the unrestricted imagination that Husain embraced throughout his life. From bold colors to expressive forms, his artworks reflect both his Indian roots and his global experiences. The museum also includes multimedia installations that help visitors understand Husain’s storytelling style and his connection to cultures across the world.
The opening of the Lawh Wa Qalam – M.F. Husain Museum is a significant addition to Doha’s cultural landscape. It is expected to become a major attraction for art lovers, students, and international visitors. The museum deepens Qatar’s growing commitment to preserving world art and building spaces that encourage creativity. More importantly, it ensures that Husain’s legacy continues to inspire future generations who admire bold ideas and artistic courage.
