Qatar Wins IMO Executive Council Seat for Third Term

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The State of Qatar has once again strengthened its global standing in the maritime world by winning a seat on the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under Category C. This marks the third consecutive term that Qatar has been elected to this important international body. The election took place during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly held in London, where many member states participated in choosing the new council members.

This success highlights Qatar’s respected position within the global maritime community. It also reflects the trust that different countries place in Qatar for its active and responsible role in the maritime transport sector. Qatar has been recognized for its continuous efforts to enhance maritime safety, protect the marine environment, and develop sustainable shipping systems that align with international standards.

Following the announcement, Qatar’s Minister of Transport, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Thani, expressed his pride in this achievement. He stated that this renewed membership shows the world’s appreciation for Qatar’s ongoing work to improve the maritime field. He also said that being elected for the third time is a result of the wise leadership of Qatar, which aims to strengthen the country's presence in major global organizations and position it as a top maritime and logistics hub in the region and beyond.

The Minister further emphasized that Qatar’s seat on the Executive Council reflects its strong commitment to the principles and goals of the International Maritime Organization. According to him, Qatar will continue to support the IMO’s mission of promoting safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly maritime transport. He reaffirmed that Qatar will keep working closely with other member states to encourage cooperation, share expertise, and support the growth of the global maritime system.

He also thanked the friendly and brotherly countries that backed Qatar in this election, noting that their support shows confidence in Qatar’s capabilities and contributions. He praised the efforts made by all national entities involved in securing this win, saying that their teamwork represents Qatar’s spirit of unity and determination to achieve success internationally.

Qatar’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Permanent Representative to the IMO, HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, also shared his thoughts on this achievement. He stated that the victory reflects Qatar’s active participation in global maritime development. He noted that Qatar’s repeated election to the Executive Council shows the international community’s appreciation for the country’s major progress in port infrastructure, maritime governance, and marine environmental protection.

The Ambassador added that this renewed trust highlights Qatar’s strong commitment to being actively involved in global maritime decision-making. He stressed that Qatar aims to support constructive cooperation between the IMO and its member states to help build a better future for international maritime navigation and transport.

With this new term on the IMO Executive Council, Qatar continues to strengthen its presence in specialized United Nations organizations. This achievement also aligns with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, which focuses on building a diversified and sustainable economy. Qatar’s steady efforts to expand and modernize its maritime sector show its determination to contribute positively to global shipping and marine protection.
