The State of Qatar took part in the 64th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body meetings held in Bonn, Germany. The meetings are considered a major step in preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), which is scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, in November.
Qatar's delegation was led by Eng. Ahmad Mohammed Al Sada, Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC). Representatives from several government agencies also joined the delegation.
During the meetings, the Qatari delegation participated in official sessions, technical consultations, and negotiations with international groups. Discussions focused on key climate issues, including the implementation of the Paris Agreement, adaptation to climate change impacts, climate transparency measures, financial support for developing countries, technology transfer, capacity building, and the training of national experts.
Participants also explored ways to help countries implement their climate action plans and strengthen international cooperation in addressing climate change challenges. Several topics discussed in Bonn are expected to be included on the agenda of the upcoming COP31 conference.
Delegates stressed the importance of achieving practical and balanced outcomes that consider the different circumstances and capabilities of countries while supporting the effective implementation of both the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.
The meetings also highlighted the principle of equity and shared responsibilities, recognizing the varying national capacities of countries. Participants emphasized the need to provide developing nations with adequate financial, technical, and institutional support to help them carry out climate plans and achieve sustainable development goals.
The Bonn climate meetings remain a crucial platform for international climate negotiations, helping countries resolve technical issues, build consensus, and prepare for key decisions expected at COP31 later this year.
