The State of Qatar took part in the first ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Afghanistan. The meeting was held in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Qatar was represented by Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Importance Of The Contact Group

During his speech, Dr. Al Khulaifi explained that this contact group is very important because Afghanistan is going through serious humanitarian, political, and economic problems. He said member states of the OIC need to work together to provide stability and support for the Afghan people during these difficult times.

The Qatari minister urged all OIC member states to strengthen cooperation and diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the need to put decisions into action and to engage in meaningful dialogue that would help Afghanistan move toward peace and stability.

Qatar’s Long-Term Commitment To Afghanistan

Dr. Al Khulaifi reminded participants that Qatar has been actively involved in peace efforts for many years. Qatar has consistently promoted inclusive political processes that involve all parts of Afghan society.

Hosting Of UN-Led Doha Process

Support Through Working Groups

Qatar has recently hosted important working group meetings, including the third counter-narcotics session and the second Private Sector Working Group meeting in June and July 2024. These meetings show Qatar’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan in both social and economic areas.

Cooperation With OIC And UN

Dr. Al Khulaifi explained that Qatar is ready to work closely with OIC members and the United Nations to help Afghanistan. He stressed that this effort will support humanitarian needs, encourage constructive dialogue with Afghanistan’s caretaker government, and follow international guidelines such as UN Security Council Resolution 2721 issued in December 2023.

Ongoing Humanitarian And Development Role

In closing, Dr. Al Khulaifi assured that Qatar will continue its long-term efforts to support Afghanistan. This includes humanitarian aid, development projects, and ongoing diplomacy to ensure peace, stability, and better living conditions for the Afghan people.
