The State of Qatar took part in the first ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Afghanistan. The meeting was held in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Qatar was represented by Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Importance Of The Contact Group
During his speech, Dr. Al Khulaifi explained that this contact group is very important because Afghanistan is going through serious humanitarian, political, and economic problems. He said member states of the OIC need to work together to provide stability and support for the Afghan people during these difficult times.
Condolences For Earthquake Victims
Dr. Al Khulaifi also expressed Qatar’s sadness over the recent earthquake in Afghanistan. He offered sincere condolences to the victims and their families, stressing Qatar’s solidarity with the Afghan people in times of tragedy.
Call For Stronger Diplomatic Efforts
The Qatari minister urged all OIC member states to strengthen cooperation and diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the need to put decisions into action and to engage in meaningful dialogue that would help Afghanistan move toward peace and stability.
Qatar’s Long-Term Commitment To Afghanistan
Dr. Al Khulaifi reminded participants that Qatar has been actively involved in peace efforts for many years. Since 2013, Qatar has hosted the Doha Peace Process, which aimed to bring Afghan groups together for dialogue and peaceful solutions. Qatar has consistently promoted inclusive political processes that involve all parts of Afghan society.
Hosting Of UN-Led Doha Process
He also highlighted that Qatar hosted the UN-led Doha Process, where the UN Secretary-General and special envoys held meetings on Afghanistan in May 2023, February 2024, and July 2024. These talks focused on promoting cooperation and addressing Afghanistan’s challenges.
Support Through Working Groups
Qatar has recently hosted important working group meetings, including the third counter-narcotics session and the second Private Sector Working Group meeting in June and July 2024. These meetings show Qatar’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan in both social and economic areas.
Cooperation With OIC And UN
Dr. Al Khulaifi explained that Qatar is ready to work closely with OIC members and the United Nations to help Afghanistan. He stressed that this effort will support humanitarian needs, encourage constructive dialogue with Afghanistan’s caretaker government, and follow international guidelines such as UN Security Council Resolution 2721 issued in December 2023.
Ongoing Humanitarian And Development Role
In closing, Dr. Al Khulaifi assured that Qatar will continue its long-term efforts to support Afghanistan. This includes humanitarian aid, development projects, and ongoing diplomacy to ensure peace, stability, and better living conditions for the Afghan people.
