Qatar Pushes Peace Talks, Warns on Strait of Hormuz Risks

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy and peaceful solutions amid rising regional tensions. Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Qatar is in continuous contact with key international partners, including the United States, to monitor developments and support efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.

Speaking during the Ministry’s weekly media briefing, Al Ansari highlighted Qatar’s strong support for mediation efforts led by Pakistan. He said it is too early to declare the failure of ongoing negotiations, as global support for dialogue remains strong and there is hope for a successful outcome. Qatar continues close coordination with Pakistan, which is actively engaging all parties involved.

Al Ansari noted that Gulf countries are in near-daily communication with relevant stakeholders due to the direct impact of the crisis on regional security and stability. He stressed that cooperation among regional partners is longstanding and continues to play a key role in managing tensions.

Addressing concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, Al Ansari warned that any disruption or closure would escalate the situation from a regional issue to a global crisis. He explained that the strait is vital for energy supplies, trade routes, and global logistics. Any blockage would have widespread effects, including on daily life and essential services worldwide.

He emphasized that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is a shared international responsibility. Qatar, he said, remains a reliable global energy partner and is working with international allies to ensure maritime security and market stability.

On defense and international relations, Al Ansari stated that Qatar continues to strengthen its partnerships as part of a broader strategy to diversify global ties. Relations with Pakistan, he added, are strong and cover multiple areas of cooperation.

Regarding Syria, Qatar reiterated its ongoing support for the Syrian people and its commitment to contributing to stability and development in the country. Bilateral relations between the two nations are also progressing on political and economic fronts.

Al Ansari also confirmed ongoing communication with Iran. During a recent call between Qatar’s Prime Minister and Iran’s Foreign Minister, Qatar urged Iran to halt attacks in the region and focus on peaceful solutions. He repeated Qatar’s support for mediation efforts and ongoing negotiations.

On security matters, he praised the role of the Qatari Armed Forces in protecting the country during recent tensions and reaffirmed support for international efforts to maintain ceasefires and reach long-term solutions. However, he cautioned that it is too early to predict the future of any ceasefire, as it depends on the commitment of all parties involved.

Turning to Lebanon, Al Ansari expressed Qatar’s firm support for the country’s unity and sovereignty. He condemned recent violations that caused casualties and displacement but welcomed the ceasefire as a positive step toward reducing tensions. He called for full adherence to the ceasefire and a clear international stance against violations.

Finally, Al Ansari stressed that all regional conflicts must be resolved through dialogue. He warned that continued escalation would harm the global economy, especially oil and gas sectors. Qatar supports extending ceasefires if necessary, to allow more time for negotiations and to avoid further instability.

Qatar continues to advocate diplomacy as the only effective path toward lasting peace and regional stability.
