US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Friday that Qatar will be allowed to establish a facility at Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho. This facility will host Qatari F-15 fighter jets and pilots. The decision follows President Donald Trump’s executive order to protect Qatar after Israeli air strikes targeted Hamas leaders in Doha. The move emphasizes the growing defense partnership between the United States and Qatar.
Joint Training and Enhanced Cooperation
Hegseth explained that the Idaho location will host Qatari F-15s and pilots to improve combined training, increase interoperability, and strengthen overall defense capabilities. The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance military collaboration and readiness between the two nations. Hegseth described the facility as a demonstration of mutual trust and a continued example of US-Qatar partnership.
Qatar’s Role in Regional Mediation
The US official acknowledged Qatar’s important role as a mediator in regional conflicts. Qatar helped negotiate a truce and a hostage-prisoner swap deal between Israel and Hamas. Additionally, the country assisted in securing the release of a US citizen from Afghanistan. These diplomatic contributions underscore Qatar’s influence in regional stability and international diplomacy.
Qatari Officials Emphasize Strong Partnership
Qatari Defense Minister Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani hailed the move as proof of a strong and enduring partnership. He emphasized the deep defense relationship shared between the two countries. The announcement highlights Qatar’s growing involvement in joint military exercises and strategic cooperation with the United States.
Context of US-Qatar Relations
The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar serves as Washington’s largest military facility in the Middle East. The Idaho facility builds on existing collaboration and reflects ongoing defense agreements from previous administrations. While the Biden administration had discussed similar plans, the current decision received renewed attention under President Trump.
Addressing Public Concerns
Some social media users expressed concerns about the new facility. Far-right activist Laura Loomer criticized the decision, raising fears about security risks. In response, Hegseth clarified that Qatar would not have ownership of the base. The United States will retain full control of the existing facilities, ensuring that operational and security protocols remain under US authority.
