Qatar U-23 3x3 Basketball Team Begins World Cup With Two Losses

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Qatari U-23 3x3 Basketball Team has officially started its campaign at the 3x3 Basketball World Cup, held in Xiong’an, China, from September 17 to 21, 2025. The team began the group-stage matches with two consecutive losses in the first and second rounds, highlighting the competitive challenge ahead in the global tournament.

Early Group Stage Challenges

In their opening match, Qatar faced a strong U.S. team and lost 15-21. The Qatari players fought hard, demonstrating skill and determination, but the U.S. team’s experience and tactical execution proved decisive. Later the same day, Qatar went up against host nation China, narrowly losing 18-21 in a closely contested match. These results placed Qatar at a challenging position in a tough group that also includes Latvia and Fiji, making the upcoming matches critical for advancing to the quarterfinals.

Team Leadership And Delegation

The Qatari delegation is led by Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary General of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Director of National Teams. His leadership has been instrumental in preparing the team for international competitions. The delegation also includes the team captain Yassin Ismail, who serves as Director of the 3x3 Basketball Team, alongside key players Mohammed Bashir, Mahmoud Darwish, Mubarak Jama, and Mustafa Ndaw. Each player brings unique strengths to the team, combining speed, precision, and strategic thinking on the court.

Focus On Upcoming Matches

Qatar’s U-23 team is now preparing for their next two group-stage matches against Latvia and Fiji on September 20. These matches are crucial, as only the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The team is focused on improving cohesion, sharpening tactics, and maximizing scoring opportunities to secure positive results and keep their World Cup aspirations alive.

Tournament Structure And Rules

The 3x3 Basketball World Cup follows a group-stage round-robin format. Each group’s top two teams advance to the quarterfinals, eventually leading to the final match. Seedings are determined based on FIBA U-23 rankings, effective January 1, 2025. This ranking system reflects performance in previous international competitions and ensures balanced matchups. Qatar’s position in this tournament is a result of consistent performance and strategic planning by the federation.

Qatar’s Road To The World Cup

Qatar earned its place in the 3x3 U-23 World Cup after a brilliant performance in the 2025 3x3 Youth Nations League. The team won the third and sixth stages of the tournament, hosted by the Qatar Football Association in Doha. Their dominance in these stages helped Qatar collect a total of 520 points, securing qualification for the World Cup and demonstrating their growing prowess in the international 3x3 basketball scene.

Player Contributions And Performance

Captain Yassin Ismail has been instrumental in leading the team on and off the court. His experience, tactical awareness, and leadership skills guide the younger players during high-pressure matches. Players like Mohammed Bashir and Mahmoud Darwish have been key scorers, while Mubarak Jama and Mustafa Ndaw have contributed to defensive strategies and fast-break plays. The combination of youthful energy and strategic leadership creates a balanced team ready to challenge international opponents.

Importance Of Preparation And Strategy

Despite early setbacks, the Qatari team continues to train rigorously, focusing on coordination, shooting accuracy, and defensive positioning. Coaches emphasize analyzing opponents’ playing styles to create adaptable strategies, ensuring the team can respond effectively to different game situations. This preparation is vital, given the close scores in their initial matches against top-ranked teams like the U.S. and China.

Strengthening Qatar’s 3x3 Legacy

Qatar’s participation in the World Cup strengthens the nation’s reputation in 3x3 basketball, a fast-growing sport recognized globally for its intensity and entertainment value. By consistently performing in youth leagues and international tournaments, Qatar is developing a robust pipeline of talented athletes who can represent the nation at senior levels in the future.

The Qatari team remains optimistic about its chances in the tournament. With matches against Latvia and Fiji remaining, the team aims to turn early setbacks into opportunities to showcase resilience, skill, and teamwork. A strong performance could secure a place in the quarterfinals and further enhance Qatar’s standing on the global 3x3 basketball stage.

National Support And Recognition

The delegation and the team’s preparation reflect Qatar’s strategic investment in sports development. National support, coaching expertise, and rigorous training schedules combine to empower young athletes to achieve excellence, fostering national pride and encouraging participation in competitive sports at all levels.
