Devastating Russian Air Strikes in Northeast Ukraine: 4 Dead, 11 Injured

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Kyiv: New Russian air assaults in the last 24 hours have escalated the conflict in northeastern Ukraine, claiming the lives of at least four individuals and injuring 11, as reported by regional authorities.

Oleh Syniehubov, the Governor of Kharkiv, indicated on Saturday that the strikes targeted not just Kharkiv city but also affected 11 nearby localities, leading to significant damage.

Drone Strike Impacts Sumy Residential Areas

Furthermore, an overnight drone attack resulted in injuries to at least 11 individuals, including a child, when a drone struck a residential area in Sumy.

Emergency services in Ukraine confirmed that a 16-storey apartment complex and nearby houses were hit. Residents were quickly evacuated as firefighters worked to control the situation.

Investigations are underway to assess the damage and gather evidence for possible war crime proceedings.

Majority of Drones Intercepted by Ukraine

The Ukrainian Air Force announced that their defense systems successfully intercepted or neutralized 260 out of 286 drones targeting various regions, including the north, south, east, and central areas.

Nevertheless, 11 drones struck 10 locations, and debris from neutralized drones was reported in six other areas.

Consequences in Southern Russia

In southern Russia, a drone and missile strike in the Rostov region led to one death and four serious injuries.

According to Governor Yury Slyusar, the incident happened in Taganrog, where a missile impacted a commercial facility, igniting a fire. Emergency services evacuated civilians and managed to control the situation swiftly.

Additionally, falling debris from a drone caused a fire on a foreign cargo ship in the Sea of Azov, an essential maritime corridor between Russia and Ukraine.

Stalled Peace Negotiations

Efforts to negotiate peace in the ongoing war, which commenced in February 2022, are still facing numerous obstacles. Several discussions involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine have yet to yield results.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested a ceasefire for Easter, which was dismissed by Russia as a mere public relations tactic.

Moscow demands control over a significant part of eastern Ukraine's Donbas region, a request that Kyiv has staunchly opposed, citing constitutional limitations and ongoing military resistance.
