Endangered Iguanas Flourish in Caribbean Sanctuary

Endangered Iguanas Flourish in Caribbean Sanctuary

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A quiet Caribbean island, Prickly Pear East Cay, has transformed from desolation to a thriving sanctuary teeming with the sounds of the Lesser Antillean iguana — a critically endangered species, once on the brink of extinction.

Celebrated by groups like the Anguilla National Trust, this revival showcases how focused human effort and strategic planning can restore a species.

Species in Peril

Once abundant across various Caribbean islands, the Lesser Antillean iguana, scientifically referred to as Iguana delicatissima, coexisted with indigenous inhabitants for generations. Experts theorize these iguanas drifted to the Caribbean via tree trunks or debris from South American rivers.

However, habitat loss, invasive species, and competition from the more dominant green iguana have pushed them towards extinction. Today, they're extinct on islands like Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, and St. Martin, with only around 20,000 remaining globally.

A Comprehensive Rescue Initiative

Nearly ten years ago, Prickly Pear East Cay was devoid of any iguanas. Its isolation from predators made it an ideal site for conservation.

Conservationists in Anguilla initiated a rescue plan to ensure a safe environment for these vulnerable reptiles.

Equipped with noose poles, they captured iguanas across Anguilla, with residents aiding by reporting sightings.

After extensive searches, the team found 23 pure Lesser Antillean iguanas, likely the last on the island.

Genetic testing confirmed that there was no interbreeding with green iguanas, ensuring the purity of the species.

The first group of 10 iguanas was transported in breathable bags to Prickly Pear East Cay, followed by 13 more after the initial group settled.

Population Growth

The relocation was a resounding success.

The iguanas adapted quickly, leading to the discovery of burrows and nests, and their population has surged to 300.

Now, Prickly Pear East Cay is one of five global locations witnessing the resurgence of the Lesser Antillean iguana, emerging as a beacon of hope for conservationists.

Facing the Green Iguana Threat

The primary threat to the Lesser Antillean iguana remains the invasive green iguana, which was introduced in the 1800s. These creatures breed rapidly and compete fiercely for resources, further endangering the Lesser Antillean population.

Hybridization poses a severe risk; once interbred, researchers warn, the original species might not survive.

This underscores the necessity of relocating pure Lesser Antillean iguanas to predator-free zones.

Enhancing Genetic Diversity

Despite successes at Prickly Pear East, limited genetic diversity from just 23 founders is a concern.

To address this, scientists turned to Dominica, which boasts a larger population of pure iguanas.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, conservationists quarantined before traveling to Dominica, where they monitored captured iguanas and checked for genetic purity.

Some iguanas required special care, being hand-fed or provided with nutritious foods.

Ultimately, these iguanas were transported back to Anguilla and taken to Prickly Pear East Cay to further enrich the growing community.

Life in the Sanctuary

The cay remains largely uninhabited aside from a couple of small eateries. While visitors savor barbecued dishes, the iguanas are strictly protected.

The environment provides:

  • Safe nesting locations

  • Abundant vegetation

  • No predators

  • No vehicles

Iguanas can live for over two decades and undergo color transformations from vibrant green to shades of gray throughout their lives.

A Promising Future

Scientists celebrate every sign of life as evidence that endangered species can rebound in favorable conditions.

The iguana's revival transcends individual success; it highlights the critical role of biodiversity in healthy ecosystems.

Prickly Pear East Cay’s narrative is a testament to humanity’s capacity to mend what it has damaged through dedication and science.

From desolation to prosperity, the Lesser Antillean iguana has been given a shot at survival, thanks to relentless conservation efforts.
