South Korea's First Paid Autonomous Freight Service Approved

South Korea's First Paid Autonomous Freight Service Approved

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a groundbreaking development for the logistics sector, South Korea has approved its first paid autonomous freight transport service. This significant decision by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport allows RideFlux Inc., a local self-driving technology company, to commence commercial operations.

Starting in June, RideFlux will initiate parcel delivery services utilizing autonomous trucks that can travel at speeds of up to 90 km/h along a 112-kilometer route on the Jungbu Expressway.

The venture will be executed in collaboration with Lotte Global Logistics, where both entities aim to finalize a commercial freight agreement prior to the launch. Initially, the service will run three times weekly during weekdays, specifically targeting off-peak hours to maximize safety and efficiency.

For the pilot phase, a 25-ton Maxen truck from Tata Daewoo Mobility Co. will be employed. The rollout will prioritize a phased approach to safety, with a test driver initially present to oversee operations. In the next phase, anticipated to begin next year, the driver will transition to the passenger seat, enhancing the vehicle's autonomy. The final stage envisions the truck operating entirely unmanned.

Officials assert that this approval marks a critical advancement in the realm of autonomous driving technology within logistics, showcasing South Korea’s dedication to innovation and the modernization of its transport infrastructure.

As the initiative unfolds, it is poised to facilitate broader acceptance of self-driving freight solutions, likely altering the logistics landscape both domestically and internationally.
