Safety Guide: 7 Practical Measures for Women Travelling Alone

Travelling alone can be empowering and liberating, but safety planning is essential. Being prepared and aware helps reduce risks and lets you focus on enjoying the trip.

This short guide outlines practical steps to help women travel independently with confidence and caution.

1. Study Your Destination in Advance

Before you go, familiarise yourself with local customs, laws and behavioural expectations. What’s acceptable in one country may be frowned upon in another.

Check travel advisories, local news and safety ratings for neighbourhoods. Identify reliable transport options, trusted accommodation areas and emergency contacts such as your embassy or consulate.

Tip: Online forums and women-only travel groups often share up-to-date advice that official guides may miss.

2. Pick Secure, Well-Reviewed Accommodation

Your lodging greatly affects personal security. Choose hotels, hostels or rentals with good recent reviews and visible safety features like staffed receptions, CCTV and sturdy locks.

When booking through platforms, review guest comments and location maps. Cheap, isolated properties can pose higher risks; paying a bit more for safety is often wise.

Practical step: Send your accommodation details to someone you trust before you arrive.

3. Keep People Updated and Stay Reachable

Share your itinerary with family or close friends, including flights, accommodation addresses and planned activities. Regular check-ins reduce worry and help in emergencies.

Use location-sharing apps or services to provide a live location when needed. If your regular phone service won’t work, consider a local SIM card or a portable Wi‑Fi device.

4. Dress to Respect Local Norms and Blend In

Adapting your clothing to local customs helps minimise unwanted attention. Research typical dress expectations in advance and pack accordingly.

Blending in does not mean hiding your identity; it means reducing visibility as a target while moving around confidently and respectfully.

5. Rely on Your Instincts and Define Boundaries

Trust your instincts. If a situation feels off—a person, a ride or an isolated area—remove yourself immediately without worrying about manners.

Keep personal details private and avoid oversharing your plans with strangers. If you need assistance, approach families, groups or staff in public venues for help.

6. Protect Valuables and Use Anti-Theft Tools

Pickpocketing is common in crowded spots. Use anti-theft bags, crossbody styles with secure closures, and distribute money and documents across multiple locations.

Keep digital backups of passport, visa and insurance in a secure cloud folder so you can access copies if originals are lost.

Useful items:

  • RFID-blocking wallet

  • Slash-resistant bag straps

  • Portable door lock for accommodation

7. Stay Sober, Alert and Aware of Your Surroundings

Enjoyment is part of travel, but avoid leaving drinks unattended and be cautious about accepting beverages from strangers. Know your limits.

Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas; opt for reputable taxis or ride apps. Keep headphones out to stay alert to your environment.

Build Support While on the Road

Solo travel need not mean isolation. Join organised tours, meetups or hostel events to meet other travellers—safety often increases with community.

Platforms such as Meetup or local women’s travel groups can provide social and practical support during your trip.

Closing Note

Travelling alone as a woman is an opportunity to grow and explore. With sensible preparation, awareness and common-sense precautions, you can travel safely and confidently. Plan ahead, trust your judgement, and enjoy the journey.

Pack wisely, stay connected, and travel safely.
