Dhofar Municipality is executing two major infrastructure projects in the Wilayat of Salalah to strengthen urban systems and improve city resilience. The initiatives include a stormwater drainage network and internal road improvements, alongside protective structures to prevent valley erosion caused by seasonal floods. The combined investment for these projects exceeds RO 6 million.
Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Ba'owain, Director General of Projects and Technical Affairs at Dhofar Municipality, confirmed that the stormwater drainage network project is valued at RO 4 million and currently stands at 76 percent completion. The project is expected to be finalized by April 2026, remaining on schedule and within budget.
The drainage project is designed to enhance water flow across multiple residential districts and internal roads in Salalah. By efficiently managing rainfall, the initiative reduces water accumulation and prevents traffic disruptions, ensuring residents experience smoother commutes and safer urban conditions.
In addition, the valley protection project, estimated at RO 2.6 million, involves extensive concrete construction at Wadi Sahalnut and Wadi Thamrin. Implementation is 54 percent complete, with project completion anticipated in the second half of 2026. This project aims to strengthen protective measures against erosion, maintaining the integrity of local valleys and reducing the risk of flood-related damage to surrounding areas.
Dr. Ba'owain highlighted that both projects reflect Dhofar Municipality’s ongoing commitment to sustainable urban development. By addressing drainage, road infrastructure, and valley protection, the municipality seeks to enhance the quality of life for residents and ensure Salalah is better prepared for seasonal rainfall challenges.
He added that these developmental projects play a vital role in long-term urban planning. Effective water management and reinforced flood protections not only safeguard property but also support the city’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The initiatives also demonstrate the municipality’s proactive approach in adopting modern engineering solutions to meet the demands of a growing urban population. By combining efficient drainage systems, upgraded roads, and valley protection, Salalah is set to benefit from a more resilient, well-planned urban environment.
Residents and stakeholders have expressed optimism that the projects will lead to safer streets, improved mobility, and stronger protection against natural hazards. The ongoing work represents a significant milestone in Dhofar Municipality’s strategy to develop Salalah into a sustainable and resilient city.
