The closure of pig farms in Tanjong Sepat, Selangor, is approaching its conclusion, with around 11,000 pigs left before the process is fully realized. Authorities confirm that about 30 farms are still temporarily operating under a phased transition plan established by the state government earlier this year.
Datuk Izham Hashim, the Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Executive Councillor, noted that the closure has been progressively executed since February after it was found that some animals were not mature enough for the required disposal when the eviction order was issued. During this final adjustment phase, no new piglets are being introduced to the farms.
According to governmental plans, the remaining livestock will be systematically moved to the slaughterhouse located in Rawang. Authorities anticipate completing the entire closure process shortly before more stringent enforcement measures come into effect in July.
Discussions regarding the transition strategy were held recently by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin. The government aims to transform the 141.6-hectare area into alternative high-value agricultural activities post the cessation of pig farming.
Officials have also scheduled a meeting on June 9 to discuss federal and state support measures for impacted operators. Reportedly, initiatives will include land restoration and aid programs to assist the 87 farm operators in transitioning to different agricultural or economic pursuits.
Previous reports indicated that all pig farms in Tanjong Sepat are anticipated to discontinue operations entirely by the end of June. Enforcement actions are planned to officially commence on July 1, following a six-month grace period granted to operators to lessen their business activities and sell any remaining livestock.
This closure follows a decree from Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who has consistently been against pig farming across various districts in the state. The decision has fundamentally altered the livestock industry's dynamics in the region.
Officials assert that the transition is being conducted cautiously to ensure a balance between agricultural restructuring, economic viability, and social concerns for affected workers and business owners. Long-term development plans for the area are expected to focus on fostering more sustainable and varied agricultural sectors.
