His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the Arabic language during a key meeting on Sunday with founders of the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Beirut. This gathering at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre in University City, Sharjah, symbolizes a deepening of cultural and linguistic relationships between Sharjah and Lebanon.
Leading the Lebanese delegation were Dr Emile Badi Yaqub and His Excellency Dr Rashid Darbas. Sheikh Sultan extended his warm welcome to the members and offered congratulations on the inaugural launch of the Arabic Language Academy in Beirut, seeing the partnership with Sharjah as a timely enhancement for the Arabic-speaking community.
During discussions, Sheikh Sultan emphasized Lebanon’s historic and influential role in the realm of Arabic culture and literature. He acknowledged the substantial contributions of Lebanese scholars, writers, and thinkers throughout generations, advocating for the academy's efforts to safeguard the Arabic language and amplify its presence.
His Highness also touched upon the necessity of collaboration among Arabic language academies throughout the region. He stressed that such partnerships are essential for unifying endeavors in documentation, publication, and cultural exchanges, allowing the Arabic language to progress while remaining deeply embedded in its historical roots.
Topics of discussion included the outreach efforts of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy to institutions in the Arab world, Europe, and Africa. Sheikh Sultan insisted that ongoing collaboration, joint ventures, and collective publications are integral for engaging younger generations with the Arabic language and reinforcing its foothold in education and knowledge.
Members of the Lebanese delegation expressed gratitude for Sharjah’s unwavering support for Arabic language projects, highlighting its impact on literature and the arts, and the promotion of academic research. They particularly noted the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language as a significant achievement that carries weight both regionally and internationally.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with His Highness receiving a commemorative shield and various academic materials from the Lebanese academy. A photo session underscored the cooperative spirit and shared cultural mission that characterized the visit.
