Sheikh Mansour Visits Weather Centre to See New Technology

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Court, recently visited the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). This Centre is the main institution in the UAE responsible for weather monitoring, forecasting, and climate research. Sheikh Mansour was warmly received by Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, the Director-General of the Centre and President of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), along with several senior officials. The visit was an important occasion to review the Centre’s advanced capabilities and ongoing work.

Learning About Advanced Meteorological Technologies

During the visit, Sheikh Mansour was given detailed briefings about the Centre’s state-of-the-art infrastructure. He toured various parts of the NCM, including the Operations Centre, where experts continuously monitor weather data. The Centre uses advanced meteorological technology to track and predict weather patterns, which helps keep the community safe. He also visited the weather forecasting units, where specialists use scientific methods and computer models to produce accurate forecasts for the UAE.

Cloud Seeding and Marine Monitoring Systems

An important part of the visit included seeing the cloud seeding systems. These systems help increase rainfall, which is very important for a dry region like the UAE. Cloud seeding involves releasing substances into the clouds to encourage rain. Sheikh Mansour also observed the marine monitoring units, which watch over the seas and oceans around the country. These units provide crucial information for marine safety, fishing activities, and coastal protection.

Renewable Energy and Weather Forecasting

Sheikh Mansour was also introduced to the sections of the Centre that focus on weather forecasting related to renewable energy. The weather plays a critical role in planning and managing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. By understanding weather patterns better, the UAE can improve the efficiency of clean energy projects and support sustainable development.

Updates on International Climate Research

The National Centre of Meteorology collaborates with international partners on climate studies. Sheikh Mansour was briefed on the latest research, including projects focused on Antarctica. These studies help scientists better understand global climate change and its effects. Such international cooperation strengthens the UAE’s role in global efforts to address climate issues and supports the exchange of scientific knowledge.

Use of a Powerful Supercomputer for Weather Prediction

A key highlight of the visit was learning about the Centre’s numerical weather prediction systems, which rely on a very powerful supercomputer. This supercomputer is one of the most advanced in the region. It processes large amounts of climate data to create detailed and accurate weather forecasts. Using this technology allows the Centre to give early warnings for extreme weather events, which is essential for protecting lives, property, and infrastructure.

Digital Applications and Real-Time Weather Information

Sheikh Mansour also visited the Media Affairs Unit of the NCM. This department has developed many digital applications and platforms to serve both local residents and the international community. These tools include direct alert systems that notify people of weather events, interactive weather maps, and smart phone applications providing real-time weather updates. By using these digital services, the NCM encourages a culture of preparedness and helps the public respond effectively to changing weather conditions.

“Early Warning for All” Platform Protects Citizens Abroad

One of the important platforms introduced during the visit was the “Early Warning for All,” developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This platform sends accurate and instant alerts to UAE citizens who are living or traveling abroad during extreme weather conditions. This ensures their safety and improves national and international coordination in managing climate risks. The system reflects the UAE’s commitment to protecting its people no matter where they are in the world.

Climate Education at the NCM Science Dome

Sheikh Mansour also toured the NCM’s Science Dome, which is an advanced educational platform. The Dome offers interactive presentations and specialised workshops aimed at raising awareness about environmental and climate issues. Students from schools and universities, as well as the general public, benefit from these educational programs. The Dome helps build climate literacy and inspires younger generations to take interest in environmental sciences and contribute to a sustainable future.

Leadership Support Drives NCM’s Excellence

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous expressed deep gratitude to Sheikh Mansour for his visit. He highlighted that the continuous support from the UAE’s leadership is a key reason behind the NCM’s pursuit of excellence and innovation. The visit underscores the important role the Centre plays in protecting lives, property, and the environment. It also highlights the dedication of the Centre’s scientific experts who work hard to address climate challenges.

NCM’s Regional and Global Role in Climate Readiness

The National Centre of Meteorology is recognised as one of the leading meteorological institutions in the region. It plays a vital role in supporting national policies related to sustainability and climate readiness. The Centre actively participates in many international initiatives aimed at strengthening the UAE’s position in addressing climate change. Its work not only helps protect the country but also contributes to the global fight against climate issues.
