Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty along with her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, has approached the Bombay High Court to seek the annulment of a Rs 60-crore cheating charge brought against them by the Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing. They also requested the court to prevent the police from filing a chargesheet or taking any further action while their application is pending.
Judicial Proceedings and Future Dates
The hearing took place on Monday before a bench chaired by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekar alongside Justice Gautam Ankhad. They directed the couple to present copies of their application to the complainant, Deepak Kothari, and have set the next hearing date for November 20.
Details of the Allegations
According to the complaint by Kothari, between 2015 and 2023, the couple encouraged him to invest Rs 60 crore into their enterprise, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, but allegedly misappropriated the funds for personal use.
Response from Shetty and Kundra
In their filed plea, Shetty and Kundra claim that the FIR is rooted in misleading information and was lodged with an intention to coerce money from them. Shetty has emphasized her limited role in the daily operations of the business, asserting her involvement was temporary.
The couple contends that the matter is fundamentally a civil issue stemming from a failed business initiative rather than criminal wrongdoing, citing unforeseen economic challenges, including the impact of the November 2016 demonetization, as significant factors contributing to their company’s decline.
They have requested the Bombay High Court to dismiss the FIR and stop any police action until their applications are fully examined. The couple reiterates that their losses were strictly related to business ventures, denying any allegations of fraud or criminal intent.
