H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended the launch of the 25th edition of the Sir Bu Nair Festival at Al Heera Beach. The festival, marking its silver jubilee, runs from 16th to 25th October, with additional activities on 24th and 25th October on Sir Bu Nair Island, celebrating the UAE’s natural and maritime heritage.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The festival opened with a documentary showcasing Sir Bu Nair Island’s history, biodiversity, and the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority’s efforts over the years. The film highlighted the island’s coral reefs, turtles, bird species, and the international recognition it has earned as a protected nature reserve.
Marine-Themed Artistic Performances
H.H. Sheikh Sultan and attendees enjoyed marine-themed performances illustrating the Emirati people’s connection to the sea. The performances emphasized traditional maritime values, the importance of sailors and divers, and the role of teamwork and determination in shaping the community.
Drone Light Show Celebrates Nature
A creative drone light show projected artistic displays above Al Heera Beach, including the festival’s logo and images of Sir Bu Nair Island. The show celebrated marine biodiversity, the island’s beauty, and Sharjah’s commitment to environmental preservation, marking the festival’s 25-year milestone.
Honouring Partners and Contributors
H.H. Sheikh Sultan honoured partners, sponsors, and collaborators who contributed to the festival’s success. The ceremony also included traditional folk performances, showcasing Sharjah’s cultural heritage alongside environmental awareness.
Environmental Activities on Sir Bu Nair Island
During the festival, H.H. Sheikh Sultan observed coral reef cultivation, turtle conservation, beach and water clean-ups, and enforcement of environmental regulations on the island. He was briefed on the island’s wildlife, including hawksbill turtles, the slender-billed gull, and coral ecosystems.
Educational Workshops for Children
Children participated in workshops promoting marine and environmental awareness. H.H. Sheikh Sultan engaged with students to learn about initiatives fostering responsibility towards natural resource conservation and positive environmental behavior through experiential learning.
Support for Local Businesses
The accompanying exhibition featured local and family-run businesses. H.H. Sheikh Sultan explored handicrafts and handmade products, understanding the role of SMEs in community events and how the festival supports their visibility and growth.
Sharjah’s Environmental Legacy
Over 25 years, the Sir Bu Nair Festival has strengthened partnerships and research networks to preserve natural heritage and biodiversity. It has positioned Sharjah as a regional leader in environmental protection and sustainability, highlighting the emirate’s long-term commitment to conservation.
The launch was attended by Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority; Ali Salem Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority; Khalid Jasim Al Madfa, Chairman of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; Major General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police; and other senior officials, reinforcing the importance of collaboration for environmental stewardship.
