Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, inaugurated the “Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street” exhibition at the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum (QOSM). The exhibition, presented in collaboration with London’s Design Museum, marks its Middle East debut in Doha, running from October 28, 2025, to March 7, 2026.
“Sneakers Unboxed” takes visitors on an exciting journey through the design and cultural transformation of sneakers—footwear that began as practical sports equipment but evolved into a global style statement influencing generations. The exhibition showcases over 200 pairs of sneakers, each representing a key chapter in the evolution of fashion, sport, and identity.
Visitors to the exhibition can explore rare, vintage, and limited-edition sneakers, alongside modern classics and groundbreaking collaborations. The display is complemented by photographs, short films, and historical archives, providing insight into the creativity and innovation behind sneaker culture. One of the main highlights includes an exclusive presentation of Virgil Abloh’s iconic sneaker designs, celebrating his impact on contemporary design and fashion.
Speaking at the opening, Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulla Al-Thani, President of QOSM, emphasized the exhibition’s importance in connecting sport, art, and culture. He stated, “Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street reflects our ongoing commitment to exploring the intersection of sport, design, and culture. This exhibition celebrates how innovation and creativity have transformed something as everyday as a shoe into a global cultural phenomenon.”
Tim Marlow, Chief Executive and Director of London’s Design Museum, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition’s first showing in the Middle East. He noted, “Over the past 50 years, sneakers have evolved from a sports shoe to the most prominent form of footwear in the world, with well over a billion pairs sold last year alone. This exhibition explores a design phenomenon that fascinates everyone—from sneaker collectors to world-class athletes—uniting technical innovation, performance, and street culture.”
The exhibition offers more than a visual experience. It invites visitors to understand how sneakers have influenced social movements, youth identity, and creative expression. It also highlights how sneaker design reflects shifts in technology, materials, and global trends, showing how innovation has shaped both performance and fashion.
The “Sneakers Unboxed” exhibition forms part of Evolution Nation, an 18-month cultural campaign celebrating Qatar’s artistic and cultural development over the last 50 years. The campaign commemorates milestones since the founding of the National Museum of Qatar, symbolizing the country’s journey from its rich heritage to its modern-day global cultural presence.
Through events like this, Qatar continues to position itself as a leading destination for artistic innovation and international collaboration. By hosting major global exhibitions, the country promotes cross-cultural dialogue and nurtures local appreciation for design and creativity. The exhibition also aligns with Qatar Museums’ mission to connect local audiences with global artistic movements, encouraging cultural exchange and education.
The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum serves as a perfect venue for “Sneakers Unboxed,” as it bridges the worlds of athletic achievement and design innovation. The museum’s exhibitions often highlight how sports inspire creativity, making it a fitting space for this unique collection that unites performance, fashion, and culture.
With its dynamic displays and immersive storytelling, “Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street” is expected to attract both local and international audiences. The exhibition promises to inspire designers, athletes, collectors, and visitors who share a passion for creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural evolution. It represents not just a showcase of shoes but a celebration of human imagination, tracing how something as simple as a sneaker became a symbol of identity and innovation around the world.
