Political Shake-Up in South Sudan: VP Bol Mel Ousted

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a major political shift, President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has dismissed Vice-President Benjamin Bol Mel, a prominent figure once viewed as a successor. The dismissal includes stripping Bol Mel of his military rank and his position in the National Security Service (NSS), marking a significant government overhaul.

Also removed in this shake-up were the central bank governor and the revenue authority head, both associated with Bol Mel. The announcements were made via state television, yet no specific reasons were given for these decisions.

At 47, Bol Mel was appointed vice-president just last February, taking over from James Wani Igga. He was quickly instated as the first deputy chairman of the ruling SPLM party, which was seen as a potential step toward future leadership roles. His rise occurred despite being under US sanctions since 2017 for alleged corruption, sanctions reaffirmed earlier this year. The US Treasury labeled him as President Kiir’s “principal financial advisor,” a characterization his office disputes.

The political landscape in South Sudan is becoming increasingly precarious, with fears mounting that Bol Mel’s dismissal might exacerbate instability. Since gaining independence in 2011, South Sudan has faced turmoil, descending into a civil war in 2013 following a fallout between Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar. While a power-sharing agreement in 2018 seemed to halt the fighting temporarily, intermittent violence persists, and planned elections are repeatedly postponed.

This year witnessed further turbulence, as Machar was removed from office, imprisoned, and faced serious charges including murder and treason, which many perceive as inflaming existing tensions. Government representatives claim his militia was behind an attack that killed numerous soldiers, while Machar's supporters label the charges as politically motivated.

With the ousting of Bol Mel and the ongoing civil unrest, the already fragile stability of South Sudan is under increased strain. Analysts caution that without resolution of ongoing political conflicts, the nation may be teetering on the edge of renewed violence.
