Expansion of Earth Monitoring Capabilities by Space42 with New SAR Satellites

Post by : Bianca Haleem

UAE's Space42 has successfully launched its Foresight-3, Foresight-4, and Foresight-5 satellites, significantly upgrading its Earth Observation (EO) capabilities.

This addition to the Foresight constellation brings the total to five Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, enabling ongoing Earth observation. This expanded network delivers high-quality geospatial data to governments and industries across the globe.

In collaboration with Finland's ICEYE, these satellites were developed as part of a technology transfer project designed to boost local expertise and promote sustainable supply chains. Notably, integration and testing were done at Space42’s Abu Dhabi facility, enhancing UAE's prowess in space tech.

Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Smart Solutions at Space42, emphasized that the activation of Foresight-3, Foresight-4, and Foresight-5 enhances its capacity for timely and reliable sovereign Earth observation services. He noted that the partnership with ICEYE and achievements at Space42's facility have strengthened national capabilities and positioned them in international markets.

The new satellites operate in mid-inclined low Earth orbit, increasing monitoring capabilities in densely populated regions, where over 90 percent of the global population resides. The Foresight network feeds into Space42’s GIQ platform, which utilizes AI to convert satellite data into actionable intelligence swiftly.

With complementary orbital paths, the constellation ensures consistent performance around the clock. It provides high-resolution imagery down to 25 centimeters and efficiently captures data in various weather conditions, enhancing accuracy in monitoring small-scale changes on the Earth's surface.

Space42’s GIQ platform offers organizations the ability to enhance operational efficiency by turning satellite data into practical insights. It can significantly decrease emergency response times by up to 90 percent, reduce predictive maintenance expenses by 30 percent, and diminish operational inefficiencies by 25 percent.

The demand for Earth Observation services is on the rise, as governments and businesses turn to geospatial intelligence for risk management, planning, environmental monitoring, and security. Projections indicate that Earth Observation insights could yield over US$700 billion in economic value by 2030 while aiding in emissions reduction across diverse sectors.

The Foresight constellation's expansion aligns with the UAE’s National Space Strategy 2030, reinforcing the country's goal to become a leading player in advanced Earth observation. Investments in sovereign space infrastructure, AI, and local manufacturing are key to positioning the UAE in the fast-evolving global space sector.
