Starbucks, the largest global coffee operator, has agreed to sell 60% of its China unit to Boyu Capital for about $4 billion, signalling a significant strategic change in the market. The company will keep a 40% holding and maintain rights to the Starbucks brand in China.
After launching in China in 1999, Starbucks built the market into its second-largest outside the United States, running roughly 8,000 outlets. It faces strong local competition from chains such as Luckin Coffee, which now operates more locations and competes on price and promotions.
The tie-up with Boyu is intended to bring deeper local insight to operations while leveraging Starbucks' global reputation and expertise. Plans include long-term expansion toward 20,000 stores, new beverage innovations and strengthened digital services tailored to Chinese consumers.
Starbucks has seen sales soften recently amid weaker consumer spending, lingering Covid-19 impacts and fiercer rivalry. The chain has reduced prices in China to stay competitive, a move that has pressured profit margins.
Worldwide, Starbucks runs more than 40,000 locations. Under CEO Brian Niccol, the company has refreshed menus, prioritized barista recruitment and pulled back on automation in an effort to restore both global and local appeal.
The transaction ranks among the largest recent deals for a US consumer brand in China, underscoring both the risks and opportunities that foreign firms encounter in the world's second-largest economy.
