Sunderland and Everton played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on Monday, with Granit Xhaka's low, deflected strike cancelling out Iliman Ndiaye's early moment of individual quality.
Newly promoted Sunderland kept up their strong start to the season, moving to fourth with 18 points from 10 matches. Everton remain 14th on 12 points, still searching for greater consistency.
Ndiaye gave the visitors the lead in the 15th minute with an eye-catching solo run. Picking up the ball on the right, he weaved past several defenders before curling a precise effort into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Everton controlled much of the opening period and had chances to extend their advantage. James Garner's shot went narrowly wide, Jack Grealish struck the woodwork, and Thierno Barry missed a gilt-edged opportunity from close range.
Sunderland grew into the game after the half-hour mark and finally levelled just 40 seconds into the second half. Xhaka's low drive took a heavy deflection off James Tarkowski and wrong-footed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Sunderland held more possession while Everton relied on swift counters, but neither could break the deadlock.
Xhaka reflected on the match with frustration, saying: 'We threw away the three points in the first 25 minutes — too many simple mistakes. The second half was excellent, we just needed a little more luck.'
Everton manager David Moyes rued missed chances, adding: 'We started very well and produced a superb goal, but in games like this you must see it through.'
The draw highlighted Sunderland's resilience and Everton's wastefulness, leaving both sides with areas to improve as the season progresses.
