Sunil Amrith Secures British Academy Book Prize for The Burning Earth

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Celebrated historian Sunil Amrith, of Indian descent, has clinched the esteemed British Academy Book Prize for his impactful book, The Burning Earth: An Environmental History of the Last 500 Years. This recognition, valued at £25,000, honors exceptional non-fiction works that advance the understanding of global society and history. Amrith's extensive research presents a nuanced view of humanity's relationship with the environment, making a significant contribution in light of today’s climate challenges.

Hailing from Kenya and raised in Singapore, Amrith currently holds a Professorship in History at Yale University. His work embodies a rich tapestry of global heritage and intellectual insight. The judging panel acknowledged The Burning Earth as “essential reading” for comprehending the current climate crisis. The award ceremony took place at the British Academy in London, underscoring the book's vital role in environmental history.

In a video address from the US, Amrith conveyed that The Burning Earth aims to instill hope rather than despair, emphasizing the intertwined fates of human experiences and ecological degradation. He drew attention to historical ideas and sustainable methods that could guide humanity towards a more harmonious existence.

Professor Rebecca Earle, who chaired the judging panel, praised The Burning Earth as a “comprehensive account of the links between human history and environmental change.” She commended Amrith’s captivating storytelling and global lens, highlighting its relevance for understanding the roots of current environmental issues. The judges recognized his ability to intertwine thorough research with engaging narratives, marking The Burning Earth as a standout among the six finalists.

The British Academy Book Prize celebrated The Burning Earth for illustrating how colonization, migration, and industrialization have influenced today’s environmental predicaments. It invites readers on a historical expedition from the Americas' colonization to the impacts of the Second World War, shedding light on human actions' marks on the planet. The judges noted Amrith’s talent for transforming dense historical data into a relatable narrative.

Professor Susan J. Smith, President of the British Academy, highlighted the awarded book's extraordinary blend of analytical depth and engaging writing. She stated that The Burning Earth exemplifies the essence of the prize—recognizing works that enrich public awareness of global affairs through insightful, meticulously crafted research.

Other notable nominees for the British Academy Book Prize included William Dalrymple's The Golden Road: How Ancient India Transformed the World, and Lucy Ash’s The Baton and The Cross: Russia’s Church from Pagans to Putin, among others. All nominees received recognition along with £1,000, yet it was Amrith's The Burning Earth that truly resonated with the prize's vision of originality and global significance.

Established in 2013, the British Academy Book Prize is a premier honor in the UK for authors in the humanities and social sciences, celebrating works that provide fresh insights into the human condition. By bestowing this year’s accolade upon Sunil Amrith, the Academy reaffirmed its commitment to amplifying voices that encourage a re-examination of our understanding of history and environmental stewardship.

Through The Burning Earth, Amrith not only chronicles a long history of ecological transformation but also inspires contemplation on how earlier generations' choices influence our planet's future. His recognition at the British Academy Book Prize highlights the necessity of reconnecting with lost wisdom and rediscovering our capacity to create a more sustainable and compassionate global community.
