China Experiences Holiday Travel Boom with Visa-Free Initiatives

Post by : Shakul

During the May Day holiday celebrations, China saw a significant increase in holiday travel, with millions of travelers crossing borders over the five-day period. The National Immigration Administration reported nearly 11.3 million cross-border journeys recorded from May 1, highlighting the resurgence in tourism and heightened international travel enthusiasm.

On average, about 2.26 million people crossed borders daily during the holiday, reflecting a 3.5 percent uptick from last year. The highest volume of crossings occurred on May 2, as airports, train stations, and border points managed substantial passenger influx throughout various regions of the nation.

The influx of foreign travelers to China also demonstrated substantial growth during this holiday. Over 1.26 million visits by foreigners were logged, indicating a 12.5 percent rise year-on-year. Officials reported that approximately 436,000 visitors entered China through visa exemptions, marking an impressive 14.7 percent increase as the country broadens its visa-free entry policies for global visitors.

The Chinese government has enacted numerous visitor-friendly policies in recent years, such as extended visa-free stays, streamlined entry protocols, and tax refund services for tourists before they leave. These initiatives aim to enhance tourism recovery and reaffirm China’s place as a leading global travel destination.

Data indicates that foreign visitors are increasingly exploring regions beyond China's well-known tourist destinations. Provinces like Heilongjiang, Guizhou, Hunan, Xinjiang, and Shanxi reported over a 60 percent increase in inbound tourists during the holiday period, with arrivals from Russia seeing the largest surge, surpassing 120 percent compared to last year.

Instead of solely visiting famed tourist spots, many international guests engaged more with local cultures and everyday experiences. For instance, a visitor from Russia in Jiangsu Province attended local football matches and participated in Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese exercise rooted in historical wellness practices.

Meanwhile, a Vietnamese tourist in the border city of Dongxing enjoyed the local night markets, tasted regional delicacies, and shared her encounters online. She expressed admiration for the kindness of the locals and remarked on the comfort and convenience of transportation and urban life in China as a first-time visitor.

Chinese cities are also rolling out new tourism support services to enhance the experience for international tourists. In Beijing, sites like the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven have introduced English feedback surveys and AI translation devices to aid foreign tourists in navigating cultural attractions. Additionally, cities such as Changsha and Chengdu have expanded international payment options, bilingual volunteer programs, and currency exchange facilities.

Experts in travel perceive the notable surge in cross-border travel during the May Day holiday as a testament to the growing vitality of China’s tourism industry and its broader economic implications. Analysts note that the country’s lenient visa regulations, improved tourism infrastructure, and an increasing focus on cultural interactions are attracting more visitors globally, while also inspiring Chinese travelers to embark on personalized international journeys.
