Massive Flooding in Southern Thailand Spurs Military Response

Massive Flooding in Southern Thailand Spurs Military Response

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Southern Thailand is grappling with catastrophic flooding, as relentless rains have driven water levels to two meters in certain regions, impacting nine provinces and leading to at least 13 fatalities. This flooding is a component of a broader monsoon crisis affecting neighboring Malaysia, where eight states are also experiencing significant water damage.

To combat the disaster, Thailand’s military has spearheaded rescue and relief initiatives. On Tuesday, military officials dispatched a C-130 cargo aircraft filled with food, medical supplies, and water to the areas facing the worst conditions. In conjunction with this, the navy assembled a fleet comprising 14 boats and the aircraft carrier Chakri Naruebet, which is equipped to function as a floating hospital, alongside two helicopters, medical personnel, and field kitchens capable of serving 3,000 meals per day.

Hat Yai, a crucial commercial center and rubber trading hub, has been severely impacted. The area registered an astonishing 335 millimeters (roughly 13 inches) of rainfall in just one day—marking the highest recorded in 300 years. Evacuations in Hat Yai are employing boats, high-clearance vehicles, and jet skis to aid residents in escaping the encroaching waters.

Governance in Hat Yai, led by Ratthasart Chidchod, has urged citizens to evacuate immediately due to worsening circumstances that threaten to hinder food and medical assistance. Broadcast footage showcased streets inundated with brown floodwater, stranded vehicles, and residents relying on floatation devices and makeshift boats for security.

The Matchima Rescue Center, a volunteer organization in Hat Yai, reported receiving thousands of requests for evacuations and food support over recent days. Numerous individuals stranded by the floods have taken to social media, voicing urgent cries for help, detailing their precarious situations and lack of basic services.

Overall, about 2.1 million individuals have been affected by the floods across Thailand. Approximately 13,000 have been relocated to shelters, although many remain isolated and deprived of aid.

In neighboring Malaysia, more than 19,000 people have been evacuated to 126 centers, particularly in northern border regions. Rescue operations are ongoing within flooded residences, especially in Perlis, aiding vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children to attain safety. Malaysia's Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has conveyed his prayers and urged citizens to heed evacuation directives to ensure their safety.

The flooding crisis is also having a detrimental effect on Thailand's economy. The central bank has reported that 70% of bank branches in the hardest-hit provinces are non-operational. Industrial production has taken a hit as 17 power plants have ceased functioning, and numerous factories in Songkhla province have succumbed to flooding, leading to estimated losses of 1.28 billion baht (approximately $39.6 million). Factory operations remain hampered by disrupted supply chains.

This flood crisis has instigated considerable distress among residents who continue to face rising waters. Rescue operations and volunteer efforts are in full swing to provide relief and evacuate those in peril as the situation develops.

This natural disaster underscores the challenges inherent in seasonal monsoon rains in the region and highlights the critical need for coordinated emergency responses to protect both lives and livelihoods.
