Thailand Issues Warning Over Dangerous Fake Squishy Toys

Post by : Shakul

In light of increasing safety concerns, Thailand's government has ramped up efforts to safeguard children from potentially hazardous counterfeit squishy toys. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, has mandated heightened vigilance from the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) regarding these products nationwide.

Enhanced Inspections of Products

The Consumer Protection Board has been instructed to collaborate with the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) to carry out inspections of toys available in both physical and online markets. Their key focus will be to identify items lacking appropriate labels, safety certifications, or confirmed manufacturers, ensuring unsafe goods are withdrawn from circulation.

Serious Health Concerns Raised

Officials have alerted the public that substandard squishy toys might contain harmful chemical residues that pose risks to children's health over prolonged use. Some of these toys even resemble food items—like cakes and donuts—heightening the danger of young children mistakenly ingesting them, which can lead to choking.

Advisory for Parents on Certified Products

Supamas urged parents to opt for toys that feature clear Thai-language labels and bear the Thai Industrial Standard (TIS) certification. She cautioned consumers to steer clear of items with strong chemical scents, as these may signal unsafe contents.

Consumer Protection Laws in Effect

Under Thailand's Consumer Protection Act and Product Liability Act, manufacturers, importers, and sellers must ensure their products meet safety regulations. Businesses failing to comply with safety standards can face legal consequences, while consumers harmed by defective items are entitled to seek compensation.

Public Cooperation Encouraged

Authorities have called on the public to thoroughly inspect toys before making a purchase and to supervise children while using squishy toys. Parents are also recommended to clean these toys routinely and dispose of them if they show signs of damage or mold. Complaints regarding unsafe products can be reported via the OCPB hotline, mobile application, or the official website.
