Former Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara of Thailand has passed away at the age of 93, as confirmed by the Public Relations Department of the Office of the Prime Minister on Saturday. The announcement noted that she had been enduring a blood infection, and unfortunately, her health declined despite the diligent care of her medical team. She peacefully left us on October 24, 2025, at 9:21 PM while at Chulalongkorn Hospital.
Born on August 12, 1932, Queen Sirikit was a beloved figure, symbolizing compassion, love, and national pride. Her birthday is commemorated as Mother’s Day in Thailand, marking her significant impact and the adoration she received from the Thai populace.
Queen Sirikit married King Bhumibol Adulyadej at the young age of 18, who was recognized as the longest-serving monarch in history until his death in 2016. Together, they epitomized unity, humility, and dedicated service to the Thai people. Her tenure as the world’s longest-serving queen consort saw her stand firmly by her husband through numerous transformations in the nation.
Although she stepped back from public duties after a stroke in 2012, her legacy as a gracious and devoted leader remained impactful. She was notable for her extensive efforts to promote Thai arts, culture, and uplift women in rural regions through her Support Foundation, which aided the production and sale of traditional handicrafts. Her devotion to Buddhist organizations and humanitarian activities showcased her spiritual commitment and sense of responsibility.
Globally recognized for her elegance, Queen Sirikit was applauded for her fashion sense, making it to the International Best-Dressed List in the 1960s, where she was celebrated as one of the most dignified and stylish women worldwide.
Though Thailand's monarchy is constitutional and lacks direct political power, it continues to be a significant institution in the nation. Queen Sirikit was not only cherished as a royal figure but also as a representation of Thai identity and maternal grace—a beacon of compassion, culture, and strength that united the people.
She is survived by her three daughters and her son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who ascended to the throne in 2016, alongside her sister, Busba Kitiyakara Sathanapong.
The passing of the former Queen marks a profound moment of sadness and reflection for many in Thailand, an end of an era, as she was viewed as the heart of the Thai monarchy.
