Thailand's PM Withdraws from ASEAN Summit Following Queen Sirikit's Passing

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, has opted out of his trip to Malaysia for the upcoming ASEAN Summit due to the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit. The Thai administration has announced that coordinating funeral preparations for the late queen will take precedence, casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, which is anticipated to be overseen by US President Donald Trump this weekend.

On Saturday in Kuala Lumpur, foreign ministers from ASEAN convened to initiate a weekend filled with crucial diplomatic maneuvers. The summit, set to involve delegates from both the United States and China, was expected to focus on significant trade negotiations and regional security discussions. Thailand's absence may signify a pivotal shift, as the nation mourns Queen Sirikit and reassesses its diplomatic engagement.

President Trump’s arrival in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday marks his inaugural Asia tour stop. He was supposed to attend the signing of an extensive ceasefire treaty between Thailand and Cambodia, which follows a violent five-day border clash experienced in July. With the Thai prime minister's departure from the ASEAN summit, talks are ongoing regarding who might represent Thailand for the ceasefire agreement.

The ASEAN Summit 2025 is dedicated to enhancing regional trade, fostering multilateral relations, and navigating global economic pressures amidst the US-China trade dialogue. East Timor will also be formally inducted as ASEAN's 11th member this year. In the backdrop, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are engaged in discussions with a Chinese delegation, led by Vice Premier He Lifeng, aiming to alleviate trade tensions before new tariffs come into effect.

This decision by the Thai prime minister underscores the profound emotional and political consequences stemming from Queen Sirikit’s death, as Thailand wrestles with balancing national grief with its regional commitments. Authorities are diligently ensuring that the ceasefire agreement and other diplomatic activities continue to progress smoothly despite his absence.
