Thailand Reduces Electricity Rates, Enhances Solar Initiatives

Post by : Shakul

In a significant policy shift, the Thai government has unveiled its strategy to lower electricity costs while advocating for renewable energy adoption. The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), headed by Anutin Charnvirakul, has sanctioned adjustments to power tariffs and launched initiatives to bolster rooftop solar energy.

Per the new regulation, residential customers will pay a maximum of 3 baht per unit for their initial 200 units of electricity consumption, a change planned to be enacted by June 2026. This initiative aims to alleviate household expenses while promoting effective energy usage.

For energy consumption exceeding 200 units, revised pricing tiers will encourage sustainable usage. Officials are optimistic that this tiered pricing approach will curtail overall energy consumption and foster better efficiency throughout the nation.

Moreover, the government intends to utilize savings from natural gas allocations to reduce electricity bills. Households consuming up to 200 units monthly from May to August 2026 will benefit from this pricing relief.

The NEPC is also prioritizing the increase of rooftop solar energy among residents. A newly approved net billing framework will enable families to sell surplus energy back to the grid for 2.20 baht per unit over a decade.

Authorities have set an ambitious target to purchase up to 500 megawatts of extra solar power, limiting household installation to 5 kilowatts per meter. This project aims to broaden the scope of renewable energy use and diminish reliance on conventional power resources.

With an expectation of benefitting over 20 million households, officials have highlighted the significance of efficient energy consumption and the necessity for all agencies to effectively execute this policy. This initiative marks a vital movement toward sustainable energy and reduced living expenses.
