Oman Hosts Asian Universities Arabic Debate Championship

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The third edition of the Asian Universities Debate Championship in Arabic officially began at the Arab Open University in the Wilayat of A’Seeb. The event highlights Oman’s growing role as a regional hub for education, dialogue, and youth empowerment. The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Mohammed Said Al Balushi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information, in the presence of Basil Ahmed Al Rowas, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth Affairs.

Organized in partnership between the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, Oman Debate Center, and Qatar Debate Center, the championship aims to promote the values of dialogue and encourage young people to express their views through logic and reason. It also seeks to strengthen the Arabic language as a tool of intellectual and cultural communication in global academic platforms.

This year’s championship brings together 40 educational institutions representing 18 Asian countries. A total of 145 debaters are participating in a dynamic and respectful environment, reflecting the diversity of cultures and ideas across the continent. The competition fosters a spirit of open dialogue and mutual understanding while helping young people refine their critical thinking and public speaking skills.

The championship serves as a platform for students to engage in intellectual exchanges rooted in respect, persuasion, and clarity of thought. Each debate session challenges participants to explore complex global issues while upholding ethical and cultural values. Through such discussions, students gain experience in active listening, constructive criticism, and teamwork — skills that are essential in academic and professional life.

Oman’s hosting of the championship for the second consecutive year underlines its success in organizing major regional youth events. The country has established itself as a preferred destination for educational and intellectual gatherings, reflecting its commitment to empowering youth and promoting intercultural dialogue. The successful hosting of the 2023 edition inspired this year’s continuation, reinforcing Oman’s dedication to nurturing future leaders and thinkers.

The championship’s objectives go beyond competition. It aims to enrich the Arabic language as a medium of intellectual discussion, support cultural diversity, and encourage young people to use dialogue as a bridge between different perspectives. Participants explore various topics related to social, environmental, and cultural issues, strengthening their understanding of real-world challenges through debate and reasoning.

By providing a platform for young debaters from across Asia, Oman emphasizes the importance of youth participation in shaping modern societies. The debates give students an opportunity to express their opinions on issues that matter, from sustainability and education to innovation and inclusion. This approach aligns with Oman’s vision of empowering the next generation to become ambassadors of dialogue and understanding.

The collaboration between Oman Debate Center and Qatar Debate Center demonstrates the shared commitment of Arab nations to promote education and cultural exchange. Such partnerships help unify efforts to revive the Arabic language in international academic spaces, ensuring that it continues to be a strong and respected language of thought, communication, and creativity.

As the championship continues until the first of November, it is expected to leave a lasting impact on participants and audiences alike. The event reinforces the values of teamwork, respect, and intellectual curiosity, inspiring young people to view debate not as confrontation but as a path to understanding. Oman’s leadership in hosting such initiatives reflects its belief that education and dialogue are powerful tools for shaping a peaceful and progressive future.
