A severe tornado struck the southern town of Rio Bonito do Iguacu in Brazil on Friday evening, leading to the deaths of at least six individuals and injuring more than 700 others. The brief yet intense storm left a trail of destruction, obliterating homes, schools, and businesses in its wake.
The local authorities reported wind speeds reaching up to 250 km/h, which caused damage to nearly 90% of the town. Entire neighborhoods were devastated; roofs were torn off, vehicles overturned, and debris littered the roads. Aerial imagery captured the extensive damage—what was once a lively town now resembles a war zone.
“It has ruined everything—houses, schools, and shops,” recounted local resident Roselei Dalcandon, standing near the ruins of her previously thriving business. “What will happen to us now?” she lamented, expressing the deep concern shared by numerous residents.
Officials have confirmed that one person is still missing as rescue teams continue to sift through the rubble in search of survivors. Emergency shelters have been set up in surrounding areas to assist displaced families.
Fernando Schunig, head of Parana’s Civil Defense, described the scene as a “war zone”, cautioning that additional casualties may arise as recovery operations progress. “When severe storms impact urban settings, the destruction is usually catastrophic and often deadly,” he noted.
The tornado also instigated severe weather in adjacent areas, characterized by high winds, hailstorms, and flash flooding affecting parts of Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Authorities have issued new warnings for hazardous weather in the days ahead.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has sent ministers and disaster relief teams to oversee emergency assistance and evaluate the damage.
Southern Brazil has experienced a series of extreme weather phenomena in recent years. Last year, devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul resulted in over 200 fatalities and displaced millions, with climate scientists pointing to global warming as a key factor in these alarming trends.
As rescue efforts progress, Brazil mourns yet another natural catastrophe, underscoring the increasing susceptibility of communities in the face of changing climate dynamics.
