Bahrain TRA Launches New Rules to Fight SMS Fraud

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain has introduced a comprehensive set of rules and technical guidelines aimed at combating fraudulent SMS scams. These scams have increasingly targeted mobile users across the Kingdom, prompting urgent action to protect consumers.

Partnership with Mobile Operators

The initiative was developed in collaboration with Bahrain’s mobile operators. A joint working group was established to focus on online safety and consumer protection. This partnership demonstrates the shared commitment of regulators and industry stakeholders to create a safer digital environment for the public.

Guidelines for Detection and Prevention

The TRA’s new guidelines outline robust mechanisms for detecting, blocking, and preventing fraudulent SMS messages. Operators are instructed to implement systems that minimize scam activity, ensuring mobile users can safely navigate digital services. The measures are designed to comply fully with Bahrain’s telecom and data protection laws.

Raising Public Awareness

In addition to technical measures, the guidelines include initiatives to educate the public on SMS scams. Simplified reporting tools and awareness campaigns will help users identify suspicious messages and report incidents effectively, further strengthening the Kingdom’s digital security framework.

Statements from TRA Officials

Sheikh Abdulla Bin Humood Al Khalifa, Director of Consumer and Communications at TRA, emphasized the importance of the collaboration. “By working together, we are enabling the public to use telecom services with greater confidence and security,” he said. TRA General Director Philip Marnick added that the guidelines reflect the effectiveness of joint efforts between regulators and industry partners in protecting the public from scams.

Strengthening Bahrain’s Digital Trust

The TRA highlighted that these measures are part of broader efforts to position Bahrain as a leader in consumer protection and digital trust. As the Kingdom modernizes its telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring public confidence and safety remains a top priority.

The launch of these guidelines marks a major milestone in safeguarding Bahrain’s mobile users. The TRA and mobile operators will continue monitoring and updating systems to respond to evolving threats, demonstrating a long-term commitment to secure, reliable, and trustworthy telecom services.
