Travel Ban Lifted for Saad Almadi, US Citizen Detained in Saudi Arabia

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a US citizen with Saudi roots, is now able to return to the United States after Saudi Arabia lifted his travel ban, confirmed by family members on Wednesday. Almadi was arrested in 2021 during a trip to Saudi Arabia for tweeting criticisms of the country's governance and referencing the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

In 2022, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison on charges that included challenging the stability of the kingdom. He regained his freedom a year later, thanks to U.S. diplomatic efforts under President Joe Biden. However, Saudi authorities had initially restricted his exit from the country.

His family expressed their relief, acknowledging that this outcome was made possible through the involvement of the U.S. administration. They stated, “This day would not have been possible without President Donald Trump and the tireless efforts of his administration.” The family hopes for continued advocacy for other US citizens still detained abroad.

This event occurs alongside renewed diplomatic ties between the United States and Saudi Arabia, with President Donald Trump hosting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During this visit, Trump reaffirmed his defense of the crown prince, dismissing inquiries about Khashoggi's murder, leading to tensions with journalists.

The crown prince, who promised a $1 trillion investment in the U.S., referred to Khashoggi’s assassination as “painful” and lamented it as a “huge mistake.” The incident had previously led to significant backlash and strained relations between the two nations.

Almadi’s situation is not an isolated incident; other U.S. citizens have faced similar detentions in Saudi Arabia for their online expressions. Notably, during Trump’s administration, Vice President Mike Pence had also urged for the release of Raif Badawi, a blogger sentenced to severe punishment for his writings. While Badawi has served his time, he remains unable to leave the country.

The lifting of Saad Almadi's travel ban underscores concerns regarding human rights and freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia. His return to the U.S. signifies a successful diplomatic intervention that reunites him with his loved ones.
