Washington, D.C. — In a marked shift from his earlier immigration stance, former President Donald Trump has voiced his robust support for international students studying in America. During an interview with Fox News, he highlighted the importance of foreign students, asserting they play a vital role in sustaining the financial viability of U.S. colleges and universities, dubbing them “beneficial” for both business and education.
Since his return to office in January, the Trump administration had rescinded thousands of student visas, imposed restrictions on international students participating in political activities, and tightened visa application processes. Prestigious institutions, such as Harvard and Stanford, found themselves under scrutiny for adherence to visa laws. While some of these measures have faced legal challenges, appeals are still in progress.
Trump's recent statements seem directed at ameliorating the higher education sector's concerns, which is significantly reliant on the tuition fees of international students. “You don’t want to eliminate half of the global student population coming to our country and jeopardize our entire university and college system — I don’t want that to happen,” he expressed during his chat with Fox News host Laura Ingraham.
Stressing the economic implications, Trump pointed out that foreign students infuse trillions of dollars into the U.S. economy, frequently paying higher tuition fees than domestic counterparts. He cautioned that a drop in international enrollment could endanger the existence of many colleges, including historically Black institutions.
Moreover, he acknowledged the advantages brought by students from China and elsewhere, asserting that global engagement keeps the U.S. higher education system competitive. “We garner trillions of dollars from students... I want our educational institutions to prosper... It’s not merely a desire; I perceive it as a business matter,” he remarked.
The former president's comments indicate a stark reversal from the stringent immigration policies of his second term, which concentrated on curbing the arrival of foreign students and intensifying visa checks. Analysts suggest the new tone may be influenced by economic realities as universities risk facing revenue deficits without foreign enrollment.
The discourse surrounding international students continues to be contentious, with lawmakers striving to balance national security concerns with the economic and cultural advantages that these students offer the U.S.
