Trump Advocates for Skilled Immigrants to Enhance U.S. Workforce Training

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed business leaders on Wednesday at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, advocating for the inclusion of skilled immigrants in the American workforce. He shared his views alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

In his remarks, Trump asserted the need for highly trained foreign workers to impart advanced skills crucial for operation in modern high-tech manufacturing facilities. He reassured that this initiative aligns with his political stance and the ongoing “Make America Great Again” campaign.

He pointed out that today's manufacturing industries require expertise in producing items such as computer chips, electronics, and sophisticated machines. Trump stated that the current domestic workforce lacks the necessary training and that skilled professionals are essential for educating workers.

Trump proposed that these skilled immigrants could come to the U.S. temporarily to train American workers before returning to their home countries, a notion that garnered applause from the attendees.

Despite the positive reception, Trump recognized that his comments diverged from the views of some of his most ardent supporters. He mentioned a recent on-air dispute with a well-known news presenter who believed the U.S. had sufficient talented workers. Trump maintained that the workforce still requires extensive training to adapt to the evolving needs of the industry.

His statements attracted criticism online from backers who advocate for stricter limitations on work visas like H-1B permits, arguing that an influx of foreign workers could undermine opportunities for U.S. citizens.

Undeterred by the backlash, Trump emphasized that opponents of his plan are likely well-meaning but may lack insights into contemporary industrial requirements. He urged that modern factories producing cutting-edge technology cannot effectively employ untrained individuals without the requisite skills.

Additionally, Trump referenced a situation in Georgia where countless South Korean workers were temporarily dismissed due to immigration actions. He revealed that he had personally intervened to ensure their retention, as the project relied heavily on their expertise for training American workers.

In conclusion, Trump advocated that permitting skilled immigrants for limited durations is vital for the U.S. to remain competitive and cultivate advanced industries while ensuring the growth of its manufacturing sector.
