In a momentous yet contentious appearance, U.S. President Donald Trump attended Sunday’s NFL clash between the Washington Commanders and the Detroit Lions, making history as the first sitting president to observe a regular-season game since Jimmy Carter in 1978. However, the occasion was quickly overshadowed by the crowd's resounding boos as he appeared on the videoboard.
Trump, who was in a private suite with House Speaker Mike Johnson, was displayed during the first half of the game. The crowd's discontent escalated when the stadium announcer formally introduced him at halftime. The jeers grew louder as he led a mid-game ceremony for newly enlisted military personnel.
Despite the negative reception, Trump seemed undeterred, interacting briefly with the media upon arriving at Joint Base Andrews later that night. “We’re gonna have a good game. Things are going along very well. The country’s doing well,” he commented, also addressing the government shutdown by stating, “the Democrats have to open it up.”
Prior to his appearance, Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown celebrated a touchdown with a lighthearted homage to the viral “Trump dance” popularized by athletes last year. Post-game, St. Brown explained, “I heard Trump was going to be at the game, so I just decided to have some fun.”
While some fans reacted with hostility, others, including Lions quarterback Jared Goff, expressed intrigue about his attendance. “Awesome that he was here,” Goff noted as Air Force One flew low over the stadium. Coach Dan Campbell remarked, “You’re talking about the president of the United States. That’s a big deal.”
During the third quarter, Trump joined Fox broadcasters Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma in the commentary box, sharing a playful segment about his high school football experiences. “I played tight end,” he joked. “It wasn’t quite football like this—it was a little easier.”
Trump left before the conclusion of the game, which ended with a 44–22 victory for the Lions.
Only two other presidents—Richard Nixon in 1969 and Jimmy Carter in 1978—had attended a regular-season NFL game in office, while Trump previously made history by attending a Super Bowl in February while serving as president.
Reports indicate that Trump has shown interest in having the Commanders’ proposed $4 billion stadium in Washington named after him. During his TV segment, he confirmed his involvement in the stadium’s development, stating, “They’re going to build a beautiful stadium. We’re getting all the approvals and everything else.”
The president has been increasingly visible at major sporting events, having appeared at the U.S. Open, Daytona 500, and Ryder Cup over the past year, often expressing that sports represent “a microcosm of life.”
Trump attended the game with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, and Senator Steve Daines from Montana.
This event also rekindled memories of Trump’s previous confrontations with the NFL during his first administration, which included his criticisms of players kneeling during the national anthem in protest against racial injustice. Despite earlier tensions, his latest appearance at an NFL game highlighted the intricate relationship between sports, politics, and public perception in contemporary America.
