US President Donald Trump remarked on Sunday that American intelligence has determined there is no evidence supporting Russia's assertion that Ukraine targeted a residence associated with President Vladimir Putin in a recent drone incident.
Russia accused Ukraine of launching drones near Putin's state residence in Novgorod, alleging that air defense systems intercepted the drones and condemning Kyiv for such actions amid crucial peace negotiations.
This claim emerged a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged in discussions with Trump in Florida, centered on a US-supported peace framework to resolve the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy flatly rejected Russia's accusations.
While returning to Washington post-Florida, Trump informed reporters that US intelligence had scrutinized the incident and found no targets at Putin's residence.
He noted there might have been activity in the vicinity, but there was no verified strike aimed directly at Putin's residence. Following confirmation, US officials concluded no attack occurred.
Earlier in the week, Trump expressed concern after a conversation with Putin regarding the matter, initially troubled by the allegations. However, he later questioned the reliability of Russia's claims, suggesting they may disrupt peace efforts.
European leaders have similarly dismissed Russia's claims, asserting they may be designed to sabotage ongoing negotiations.
Trump has faced challenges in fulfilling his promise to swiftly end the Ukraine conflict, expressing frustration with both Moscow and Kyiv. While Trump and Zelenskyy characterized their recent discussions as productive, Russia has maintained that it will not cease hostilities without satisfying its conditions, including territorial control in eastern Ukraine and restrictions on Ukraine's military capabilities.
