Trump Commits to Supporting Syria’s Progress Post-Historic Talks with Sharaa

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a groundbreaking diplomatic initiative, US President Donald Trump has expressed unwavering support for Syria after pivotal discussions with its leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, signaling a notable shift in the United States' policies toward the war-torn region.

This marks Sharaa's inaugural visit to Washington, following his previous meeting with Trump in Saudi Arabia six months ago, where discussions about lifting certain US sanctions began. During his visit, Sharaa sought to advocate for the complete removal of the stringent US sanctions imposed by the Caesar Act since 2019. While the meeting was conducted privately, the US Treasury announced a 180-day extension on the suspension of these sanctions, highlighting that only Congress can fully revoke them.

In remarks to the media, Trump lauded Sharaa as a “strong leader,” expressing optimism in his capability to steer Syria toward a more stable future. “We’ll do everything we can to make Syria successful,” Trump asserted, acknowledging Sharaa’s controversial background. “We’ve all had tough histories.”

Sharaa, who ascended to power last year after leading a revolt against the long-reigning Bashar al-Assad, aims to redefine Syria’s image on the international stage, advocating for unity and engagement. He has articulated a vision of moving away from traditional allies, such as Iran and Russia, towards a cooperative partnership with the US, Turkey, and Gulf states.

The latest announcement from the Treasury about “continued sanctions relief” follows a waiver on enforcement of the Caesar Act granted on May 23, thus extending the suspension for an additional 180 days. This indicates the US administration's willingness to back Sharaa's reforms and stability efforts in Syria.

Security collaborations are expected to be a key focus for the two leaders. Reports suggest that discussions include a potential security agreement between Syria and Israel and the establishment of a US military presence at a Damascus airbase to bolster the delicate transition.

Experts believe this meeting reflects a broader policy shift within the US, repositioning Syria as a potential ally rather than a threat in the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Despite the ongoing challenges of reconstructing a nation ravaged by years of conflict, both leaders conveyed optimism regarding the trajectory of US-Syria relations.

The landmark discussions signify a critical juncture for Syria, providing an opportunity for the nation to break free from isolation and cultivate stronger relationships with the US and its allies.
