Former US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Russian leader Vladimir Putin, asserting that the Ukraine conflict should have concluded in just one week but is now into its fourth year. During a dinner event on Wednesday, Trump pointed out the profound personal animosity between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a significant hurdle to peace.
Trump claimed that he was close to facilitating a peace agreement between the two leaders two months prior. “I believed we were on the verge of a deal. The animosity between them serves as a barrier. It’s undeniable. But I thought a resolution was within reach two months ago. Who would have imagined I could establish peace in the Middle East yet struggle to get these two to compromise? I do believe we’ll find a way,” Trump commented.
Taking aim at Putin, he remarked that the drawn-out conflict has negatively impacted the Russian president’s reputation. “What we’re asking from President Putin is simple: end this conflict. Stop the killing of Ukrainians and the loss of Russian lives, as many Russians are falling too. This war should have been wrapped up within a week, and yet it's now entering its fourth year,” Trump stated.
The US President also revealed that India assured him of its intent to cease purchasing Russian oil, indicating this could assist in brokering a truce. He mentioned, “If India halts oil purchases, it simplifies things significantly. They promised me they would stop buying from Russia shortly. They intend to return to Russia once the conflict is resolved.”
Last week, Trump highlighted that the United States alongside NATO allies is increasing its pressure on Russia to put an end to hostilities, following his unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a ceasefire. In a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the Oval Office, Trump remarked, “Indeed, we are escalating our efforts. Together, we’re intensifying our stance. NATO has been exceptional.”
Earlier, after a meeting with President Zelenskyy, Trump expressed confidence in Ukraine’s capability to reclaim all its lost territories. “I believe that, with the backing of the EU, Ukraine can fight to regain all of its original lands,” he stated on his social media platform.
Trump’s comments have drawn significant global attention, marking an ongoing tension and unpredictability regarding the Ukraine situation. He criticizes Putin for failing to resolve the conflict swiftly while underscoring international actions, including influencing allies like India, to restrict Russian resources and promote a resolution.
As the war commences its fourth year, the former President's statements reflect the intricate interplay of international diplomacy, military actions, and personal rivalries among world leaders.
